West Perth Club's Meeting.
The largest and most promising meeting
the West Perth Football Club hag ex
perienced for a number o£ years was held
in the Star Picture Hall, Vincent-street,
last night, -n-nen the 4bth annual report
and balance sheet- were presented. Mr.
Alex Breckler presided and had alongside
him Messrs. A. A. Moffat and W. It. Orr
(president and secretary, respectively, of
the We^t Australian National Football
League). Early in the evening, members
of the club and visitors, who included
delegates from a number of other clubs,
were introduced to J. Cashman, who last
year played for Fitzroy and Victoria as a
follower, and to It. Niven, who played a
number of matches for Fitzroy last season
and was stated by Mr. Breckler to be one
of the greatest junior footballers Victoria .
has produced.
The committee, reported that the work
of last season involved the building up of
practically a new team, owing to a vast
majority of the players of the previous
season not making the necessary improve
ment towards the standard ? required in
league matches. A difficult task had been ex
perienced in fielding a team worthy of the
name of West Perth, and many juniors
were tried in an endeavour to build up
a side' for future years. Individually and
collectively the players gave many admir
able displays, but with a growing list of
casualties, the side was in a hopeless posi
tion at the commencement of the third
round.. When it was borne in mind that
the same team was not fielded twice dur
ing the season, members would realise the
task -that the selection committee had
in fielding a representative side. At the
same time, perfect harmony and good fel
lowship prevailed among the players on
and off the field, which, combined with the
good feeling existent between them and the
committee, made' the club a. happy
family. This year a special effort
waa being made to build, up a
strong . combination. .? ...
The retirement of J. Craig, who had
played with the team since 1917, and had
represented the State in practically, every
interstate fixture for the past 10 years, was
a severe loss to the club. He was now one
of a willing band of trainers of .the club.
It was also with sincere regret that the
retirement of E; Budd had to be announced
for at least 12 months owing to an injured
'shoulder. E. Flemming had recovered com
pletely from a severe injury to his rjght
knee, which had kept him out of the game
since June 1 last, and he would be with
the' club again this season. J.- Gordon, R.
Sanderson.SW. Eainoldi, W. Harris, and
W. Beyan had also received injuries which
kept them out of 'the game for an extended
period.
Trophy Winners.
Trophies were awarded as follow: — Fair-
est and best player, W. Eainoldi; most
useful player, E. Budd; best back man,
E. McGuckin; back play, E. Dalziell; goal
kicking, E. Tyson ; ruck play, J. McDiar
mid; best junior, M. Tetley; utility player,
B. Edmondsbp; most improved junior, W.
Bevan; most serviceable player, F. Sweet
apple; ruck play, B. Buzolic; most improved
player, A. Bidstrip; forward play; F. Hop
kins; wing play, J. Gordon; most con-i
sistent player, W. Eainoldi. By kicking
81 goals, E. Tyson created a record for
West Perth, the number being two in ex
cess of that kicked by F. Hopkins the
previous season. Tyson finished second in
the league goal-kicking competition, despite
the fact that he lived at Cunderdin and
did not handle a ball from Saturday to
Saturday when he came down to 'play with
the team. He therefore had a great future
before him. (Later in the evening the
president announced that arrangements had
been practically completed for Tyson to
live in the city to get the benefit of train
ing and coaching like other players.)
As coach, S. Tyson, an old and enthu
. siastic member of the club, had worked
hard' and conscientiously. In having a
live and keen president in Mr. A. Breckler.
the club was indeed fortunate.
In an addendum to the report, the presi
dent placed on record the appreciation
of the committee of management at the
efforts of 1 the secretary of the club- (Mr.
T. C. Reid). Through his untiring efforts,
he said, a credit balance to be proud of
had been shown.
The report was adopted without de
bate.
Mr. J. Everitt proposed, the toast of
the West Australian National , Football
League. - He said that the league had
faced its difficulties as a controlling body
should do., It was having a ground of
its own constructed, and when this was
completed, it would be the only controlling
body with such a possession. The importa
tion' of leading Victorian footballers by
the West .Perth Club was going to be
' of great benefit ^to the game and would
? add to gate receipts. . . ?
Mr. Moffat in reply said, that the amount
of activity in the district promised well,
. for the club. He suggested the organisa
tion of old-time footballers. The East
Perth Club was acting already and pro
posed having the juniors and schoolboys
of its district properly coached, with a
view to securing good junior footballers
in. the future. Mr. Orr also responded to
the toast.
Gold Life Badges.
A proposal by Mr. J. J. Prendergast
that the president and Dr. R. H. Morgan
be presented with gold life badges was
enthusiastically received and adopted. Mr.
Moffat was then called upon to present
the badges.
Another presentation was that of a foot
ball to Mr. J. J. Prendergast. The ball,
which was enclosed in a glass case, was
used in the first match by the first
West Australian team to visit Victoria
and South Australia. This was in 1904.
The ball was secured by Mr. S. F. Jeffrey,
who during the evening was warmly con
gratulated on having been made a. life,
member of the West Australian Football
' .League, after 36 years' association with
the game in Western Australia as player,
official and delegate, the last 26 years being
with West Perth.
The following ofiice-bearers were elected:
— President, Mr. A. Breckler (unopposed);
general committee, Messrs. S. F. Jeffrey,
N. Reed, E. Caddy, W. N. Fingland, J.
T. Tandy and A. Todd; players' represen
tatives on committee: Messrs. E. Budd
and J. Sanderson; honorary auditor, Mr.
J. J. Prendergast; honorary treasurer,
Mr. D. W. Deering; honorary secretary,
Mr. T. C. Reid. '
