Eleven Storeys on Esplanade.
Preparations are still being made for
the erection of an 11-storey building for
the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance
Society Ltd. at the corner of the Esplanade
and St. George's-court, which will be
widened to 40ft. and provide a new street
between, St. George's-terrace and the
Esplanade. The construction of 11-storey
offices, with a basement and a machinery
basement, is in progress on the St.
George's-terrace frontage, and provision
has also, been made for the erection of a
large parking and service station with
shops facing the new street and situated
between the two storey structures. In
the centre building there will be parking
on three floors to be reached by easy
ramps.
The 11-storey building on the Esplanade
will have eight floors of flats above
three lower storeys. The ground floor
will house a restaurant, caretaker's
quarters, luggage room, service quarters,
laundry, and the main entrance to the
Perth Club and the flats above. The
Perth Club will use the first floor for its
main club rooms, and occupy the second
as residential quarters. The building
has been designed in a modern adaptation
of Spanish renaissance. It will be
of steel-frame reinforced concrete construction
throughout, rising 132ft to the
parapet and 154ft. to the apex of the
lift tower roof, and will have frontages
of 62½ ft. and 100ft. to the Esplanade
and the new street respectively.
The architects are Messrs Hennessy,
Hennessy and Co., of Sydney, and Mr. R.
