"Pocket" Sermons By
Principal Kiek
"The Battle of Faith." One Hundred
Sermon Suggestions, by Edward Sidney
Kiek. (James Clarke & Co., Lon-
don).
THOUGH these short addresses on re-
ligious subjects are primarily in-
tended to help ministers and theologi-
cal students, in their pithy treatment
of significant themes, thy provide
stimulating matter fof reflection for the
serious reader.
Principal Kiek. of Parkin College
Adelaide, possesses the rare gift of ex-
pressing himself in clearly-phrased
swiftly-moving sentences which carry
the reader easily along with him on the
crest of his thought. His scholarship
never obtrudes itself; though it forms
an implicit background to the vigor and
originality with which he interprets
many familiar and less familiar texts
In these hundred "pocket" sermons
the teachings of the Scriptures are
brought into close relation with the
problems of modern life and their
.spiritual application is particularly
stressed.
In "Roads or Rainbows," for example
Principal Kick emphasises the danger
of overlooking the value of immediate
and effective action in the present by
a preoccupation with dim future ideals'
and refers this meaningly to the
practice of Christianity.
.Equally urgent is his injunction in
"The unexpected Crisis." to accumu-
late, in the spiritual life, reserves of
spiritual power, just as, in the material
world, the far-seeing man lays by in
case of need.
One of the best essays. "Make Haste
Slowly," criticises the modern cult of
speed, which has invaded even the life
of the spirit. The modern tendency
suggests principal Kiek, is to interpret
"Watch and Pray,' as meaning "Pray
with a watch in your hand.' But just
as patience is required to get the best
results in life, so patience is needed to
achieve spiritual perfection.
This book contains many sermon sug-
gestions which should prove valuable
to ministers or laymen.
