THE SPEAKER'S GALLERY.
_"
WOMEN REFUSED ADMISSION.
On Tuesday in the Legislative Assembly
Yesterday, in the Legislative Assembly,
? Mrs. Cowan asked the Sneaker (Mr. G.
Taylor) without notice, if a member was
entitled to extend the privilege of admis-
sion to the Speaker's gallery to women as
well as to men; and if not, what standing
order governed the matter..
The Speaker answered the first ques-
tion in the negative. It had never heen
done here, he said, and he did not know
of nuy Parliament in Australia in which
it had been done.
Mr. Mccallum: Yes, it has.
The Speaker said that if it had been
done elsewhere, he was not aware of it.
Regarding the second question, admission
to the Speaker's gallery was not govern-
ed by any standing order, that gallery
having: always been under the control of
the Speaker, who allowed members the
privilege of admission for their men
friends. Thc member for West Perth
was on the same footing in this regard
us auy other member of the House.
Mrs. Cowan: Am I in order, Mr.
Speaker, ia moving that your ruling'be
disagreed with? (Laughter.)
The Speaker: I am not giving*any rul-
ing. I am merely stating the position.
If the House decides otherwise it- is an-
other matter.
Mr. Corboy : Will you extend to ladies
the same privileges regarding the Speak-
er'» gallery that you extend to gentle-
men?
The Speaker: 1 have aire »dy answered
Mr. Corboy: I say "will" you.
Th» Speaker: No.
