MISCELLANEOUS.
The South Australian arrived at the Lightship
at 5 on Saturday morning, and as soon as daylight
showed the signals at the Bsach flagstaff, proceeded
through the channel. She left Melbourne at 4
p.m. on the flth, and called at Warrnambool the
following day to take in a consignment of potatoes.
During the whole passage the weather continued
remarkably fine.
The Orient liner Goolwa is 80 days out to-day,
and may be looked for in the course of the week.
The Normal Morrison, emigrant ship, is out
from Plymouth 103 days, and if at all a fair sailer
ouzht to be here in a very short time, especially 03
these vessels ore generally in good trim.
NorroE to Mariners.— Captain Creer reports
the existence of a reef on the east coast of Fliuder's
Island which is not laid down in his chart, and he
therefore desires to draw the attention of ship
masters to its position, from which Cape Barren
hears S. i E., distant from Itf to 18 miles. The
broken water, as it appeared from the topsmlyard,
extended north and south about three miles iu
length, and inside it there was an expanse of water
about six or eight miles across to the main land.
He intends reporting the matter to the Marine
Board, when we will notice more particularly the
bearings and distance.
The Kohinoor is the first of the Chilian wheat
laden fleet from Tome, which Captain Creer
describes as a beautiful place. There was a jetty,
but not of sufficient length to accommodate vessels,
Konsequently they were compelled to lay in the
anchorage and receive the wheat from barges.
On shore the means of transport of produce
from ty interior consisted of a rude kind of dray
drawn by oxen. The wheat being started into a
hide bag, made by the skin of a bullock laced to
the top framework of the vehicle. Notwithstand
ing those disadvantages, however, the Kohinoor
had tolerably quick dispatch, sailing on April 30,
and making a passage across the South Pacific
Ocean with a prevalence of light variable winds
and calms. She passed through various groups of
islands, of which in many instances Captain Creer
took sketches, especially in the case of Juan Fer
nandez. This occupation seems to have been the
only relief from the monotony of the trip, for the
weather continued so very light that there was
never a day's work accomplished over 186 miles;
though on July 12 a diversity happened in the
shape of a very severe gale, which continued for
several days, and on the 23rd another of similar
character was entered in the log-book, in which
the sea ro^e to such proportions as to stave the
bulwarks and start the main rail on the starboard
side. The barque was hove to for some hours.
withorUy a tarpaulin in the mizen rigging: and
finally ran under the lee of Swan Island for
shelter till the weather moderated on the fol
lowing day, and the conclusion of the voyage has
beau made with light variable winds and calms.
The pilat boarded when far away to the southward
of the Stations, but owner's orders compelled him
to anchor the vessel till further instructions for the
.destination of cargo. Dr. Duncan visited the
f gssel on Sunday morning in order to prescribe for
two of the seamen, who have been laid up during
part of the passage; but on finding the nature of
tlieir complaint, there wa£ no detention of the ship
if bound into harbour.
In manifest of Coorong 210 half-chests tea,
Order, should ha D. and J. Fowler.
Orient Line op Packet Ships.— A correspon
dent sends us the following:— 'A splendid new
ship of J,ll)0 tons register, specially built for this
line, was launched on the River Thames on the
10th June, from the yard of Messrs. Thomas
Bilbe and Co., Nelson Dock, Rotherhithe, the well
known builders of the Orient and Coonatto. As
the vessel glided into the water she received her
pame from Mrs. W. L. Marchant with the usual
pejgmony. After the launch the company, includ
ing upwards of 100 South Australians, ladies and
gentlerwn, accompanied by the band of the London
Scottish Bifle Corps, proceeded in a steamer, hired
for the occasion, to the Ship Tavern, at Greenwich,
and partook Mjgre of an excellent luncheon, pro
vided by the owners of the ship. Among other
loyal and customary toasts the health of Mrs.
fllarchant, who had named the ship, was proposed
by the Chairman, Air. Anderson, and enthusi
astically received.' Mr. Marchant proposed 'Suc
cess to the Yatala, rfnd Captain Legoe's health.'
Mr. Purdy. Mr. Bakewell, and Mr. Paxton spoke
ably on subjects connected with South Australia.
The Yatala is a composite ship (iron frame and
wooden planking) her length is 215 feet, her
breadth 35 feet, her depth 21 feet 4 inches.
Her graceful, almost yacht-like appearance
jn the water was the subject of general
remark, and as everything has been done
that money and science can do to make the
Yatala worthy of the Orient Line, and equal to the
requirements of the colony for passenger and
general purpoaea we venture to predict that the
good wishes expressed at Greenwich for her success
will be at least approximately fulfilled. We have
seen (be plans of the ship, but of the unrivallec
accoran^oqation and comforts provided on board
colonists ganerally will no doubt have theoppor
tunitylofjudgingforthemselveswhenUaptainLegoe
arrives here with this Yatala in the end of October.
The Murray, hitherto commanded by Captain
Legoe, was to sail from Plymouth on the 1st July in
command of Captain Smart, late chief officer of uie
eame ship, with -a largB and valuable cargo and a
full complement of passengers, The Yatala was to
jolloijr, -sailing from Plynwuth on thj 1st of
August.'
