COUNTRY NEWS.
AUGUSTA, May 6.-On April 30 the
Augusta Ladies' Hockey Club played Cowara
mup on the recreation ground, the match
resulting in a win for Augusta bY six goals
to one.-In the evening a dance was held
in the Augusta school and was most success
fuL-Mr. T. Brooker, of Meekatharra. who
has been visiting relatives at Cape Leeuwin,
is a Boer War veteran. At the recent Anaaa
service here he was delighted to meet an
other veteran in the ped n of Mr. Frank
Allnutt. a local resident. Mr. Brooker still
possesses his emergency rations issued to him
during the Boer War.-The rainfall for April
was 164 points with 18 days on which rain
fell The total rainfall registered from Janu
ary 1 until April 30 was 436 Doints. sh
ing has been very good. Jewafish. groper and
mall varieties of fish are being caught in
Flinders Bay and around the coast and flat
head, silver bream and other kinds in the
Blackwood River.--Workmen havt been busy
renovating the Cape Leeuwln lighthouse cot
tages and installing a new hydraulic water
system with a 2.500 gallons cement tank in
place of the old water-wheel, which for many
years supplied the water to the residents.
Whales are calking in to Flinders Bay. on
their way north. Prom now on, for- some
weeks. it will be a most interesting ight to
see these monsters of the deep desporting
themselves in the waters of the bay.
BALDU., May 9.-The Ballidu branch of
the Country Women's Association held its
annual general meeting on May 5. Mrs. W.
Boulter. who has been president for many
years, and Mrs. Bay Petchell. the treasurer.
both retired, and Mesdames D. Rannard and
J. Garrity were elected to fill the vacant
posItions. respectively. Mrs. G. Knapp was
re-elected secretary.--On May 4 the Balldu
golf associates played a stroke competition.
Mrs. . FlaveL 100, 28, 72, and Miss M.
Goodie, 90. 18. 72. tied for first place. On
May 8 the ladies played over nine holes, under
stroke rules. The best cards were returned
by Miss J. Belford. 44, 11. 33. and Mrs.
W. Boulter. 50. 15. 35.-About 20 members
of the Ballidu Golf Club played a stroke
competition on Sunday afternoon under ideal
conditions. The leading scores were returned
by A. Freestone. 913 -30, 63. and Mrs. H.
Goodie. 86. 15. 71.
BEDFORDALE, May 3.-On April 30 the
Bedfordale Tennis Club met a team from the
Canning Weir. the result being. Bedfordale 15
sets. Canning 8 sets. In the evening the Can
ntng players were entertained at a dance in
the Bedfordale Hall. There was an excep
tonally good attendance and the evening
proved highly sucessfnul.-Mushrooms have
made their appearance but further rains are
needed before the supply can cope with the
demand.
BEVERLEY. May 9.-The heavy rains ex

March caused the lakes south-east of Baly
Bally to fill and as a conseouence wildfowl
which had been rather scarce this summer.

plentiful but the most arresting sight is the
black swans which are present- in numbers
never before noted.-In the final match of
the bowls championship of the Beverley Club.

to 13.-The Beverley Rifle Club has resumed
operations after the summer break and mem
bers are preparing or an interclub prize
meeting to be held on June 5 on the local
range, which has been improved as a result
of a grant of £75 from the Defence Depart
ment.-The Waratah Tennis Club from Fre
mantle was represented by about 16 players
in a series of matches against the Beverley
Club on May 1 and 2. The visitors had an
enjoyable time and although defeated easily
on the first day recorded a win on the second.
BOYANUP JUNCTION. Mar 8--On Sunday.
to open the local hockey season, two Donny
brook tesms representing the ladies' and
men's hockey clubs were invited to Boyanup
to play friendly games. The local teams
won both matches.-During the week. at Boy=
anuap Mr. A. Hurst fell from a ladder and
broke his left leg.-On May 4 the Younger
Set of the C.W.A. held a successful ball in
aid of the 'Tlying Doctor" fund.-During
this Sunday afternoon, torrential rain of a
winter type set in, causing all sports to
be abandoned. Over an Inch fell.
BUNBURY. May 4.--A meeting of the West
ern Australian branch of the British Medical
Association was held in Bunbury under the
auspices of the South-Western District Medical
Association. Over 40 medicoes attended and
papers ware read by Dr. WillIams. of Man
jimpp and Dr. Merritt. of Pinlarra.---r. Ross
McDonald. Leader of the NationalistParty.
visited Dunbury yesterday and addressed a
meeting in the Bedford Hal---The Bunbury
RBepertory Club held a successfaul opening to
its winter season last nisght, when an inter
esting programme of solos, slees and a one
act play was enloyed. An amalgamation of the
Sunbury Ladies' Glee Club Men's Glee Club
and epertory Club has been effected.-Dr.
John Hammond. the eminent asrostologlst,
visited Bunbury and met a representative
gathering of citizens in the council chambers.

The Bunbury Road Board has decided to leave
the choosing of the cite for the erection of the
proposed memorial commemorating the first
settlement in the South-West. to the Austra
lind Memorial Committee. A donation of

fantsa 8chool. organiised by the Parents and
Citizens' Association. last Saturday. was
largely attended and will result in the raising

at Busselton. bringing the total for the first

there was a good attendance.--A meeting held
to discuss the formation of a St. John ambu
lance sub-centre at Busselton was poorly
attended. Those present decided to endeavour
to interest others in the formation of a
class.
COOMBERDALE. May 5.--The Coomberdale
Football Club has entered the Moors Football
Association again this year. At the annual
meeting of the club the following offlcers were
elected:-Pesdent. Mr. KE Prim; secretary.
Mr. H. Tonkin; delegates. Messrs. R. Tonkln
and J. Mur-ra. A scratch match was played
against Moora last Sunday and the local team
won by IL.8 to 5.4.--At a meeting of players

COLLIE. May 6.-The building of a bridge
over the river at the east end of the town
continues to receive the attention of the
Collie Municipal Council and at the last
meeting it was stated that Mr. A. A. Wilson.
M5L.A was endeavouring to have provision
made on the next estimates for the construc
tion of the apmaechee.-Two plays were.pre
sented by .the C.lise Repertory Club to a
large audience in the Mechanics' Institute on
April 28.-The first of a series of monthly
stae competitions was held by the Collie
Golf Club on April 30, when members played
over an 18-hole cours. Several ood cards
were returned, the best belng by L. Burns
and Mrs. J. towland.-Vandsallm on the
recreation reserve is causing the Collie Coun
cil concern and the local police have been
asked to co-operate with the municipal om
cers in suppressing the practic--During
april £1,242 was collected by the Colle
Council. electric current sales bhein the prin
cipal source of revenue. Receipts for the
half-year ended April 30 totalled £10,776
and payments for a similar period were
£11.573.
COOKd ENUP, May 2.-The annual t eneral
meeting of the Cookernup Golf Clunb took place
last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. N.
Buchanan. It was found that owing to the
departure from the district of several members
and the unfortunate death of one or two
others. t was imposible with the numbers left
to carry on the club, and therefore t was
reretfully decided to disband Sincere thanks
were accorded Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan for the
use of their property as links and the use
of their house as a club-house.--It has been
decided by the local branch of the C.W.A.
to hold an Arbor Day at the aite of the
Agricultural Hall on May 14. A picnic day
with a sports programme will be held and
picnic bags will be distributed to the children
during the afternoon. The Parents and Citi
zens' Association will assist the C.W.A. in
entertaining.
DENMARK. May 9.-The annual meeting of
the I)enmark Soccer Association was held this
.week when it was decided to open the 1938
season on May 22. The election of officers for
the season resulted as follows:--Presdent. Mr.

trar Mr. . Sctt.-Mrs. B. B. Lousada has
been appointed o the local committee of the

ing was conducted on April 30. with the fol

C. torrie, 2; C. Simmons. 3. "B" grade: W.
Whittaker. 1; F. Nockolds, 2; W. Triplett. 3.
Rainfall for April was 210 points, making 513
points since January 1. in comprison with
505 points for the corresponding period last
year.-The newly consecrated Bishop of Bun
bury (Dr. L. W. Knight) and Mrs. Knight
aid a three-day visit to the district last
week. and spent a busy time. On Wednesday
evening the rites of confirmation were admin
istered in St. Leonard's Church. followed by a
public reception in the Town Hall. at which
the chief speakers were Mr. J. D. Smith. J.P.
acting chairman of the Denmark Road Board.

Howard (Presbyterian). On Thursday the
bishop toured the western end of the district
and conducted a confirmation service in the
Tingledale State school After consecrasting
the Church of Ernland portion of the Den
mark cemetery on Friday. visits were made
to the Denmark. Scotsdale and Group 101
State schools-The motoring accident near
Williams last Friday night which resulted in
the death of Mr. F. W. Veal, head teacher at
Carmarthin, stunned the township. Accom
Panied by two colleagues, he was Journeying
to Perth to spend the school vacation.-The
champion medallists at the rent inter-school
sports have been announced as follows:

HUL1s May 4.-The Corrign Footballn s
sociation started its season's programme on
May 1 when Knlin and Kondinin that at
Kuln. A well-contested game resulted in a
win for Kondinin by 15 points-The Roe
Cricket Association finalised its season during
the morning of May L Kondinin won a hard
fought match by 18 runs and the premiership
for the season. At the close of the game
Bruce West was Presented with the ball used
in the innings, for the catch he made that
dimniesed Beckett at a critical period in the
game.-The Kuhn Tennis Club's handicap
tournament was also completed -on May 1,
when Mrs. Schafer and Miss Lenten won the
ladies' doubles This made the hat trick for
Miss Lenton. as she had already won the
ladies' singles and the mixed doubles in tlte
of a heavy handicp.-The Kuln idfle Club
sent a team of four, consisting of Bridge.
Maclean Warner and Byres. to take part in
the open' of the Kalgain rifle range. A
match over the 300. 500 and 00 yiards ranges
was contested by Corrigin, Kuhn. Narrogin
end Karlgarfn teams, which finished in that
order, the scores, being 394. 363, 361 and 336.
In the evening the visitors were entertained
at a most enjoyable smoke social.
MT. MAGNET., May 5.-The Minister for
Lands (Mr. Troy) paid a visit to Mt. Magnet
yesterday and during the evening met the
chairman (Mr. P. Cassey) and members of the
Mt. Magnet Road Board. The only matter of

ation to cattle pits on main roads. The
Minister stated that the Crown Law Depart
ment had drafted a Bill onthe subject, which
would be considered by Cabinet.--April 26

of the Mt. Magnet branch of the Coun
try Women's Association, the occasion
being the officiald opening of their rest
room. Prior to the opening ceremony a
programme of orchestraL vocal and musical
numbers was Presvented. The president of the
brpch (Mrs. C. O'Nell) delivered an address
of ecm -in which she said that the
branch was very grateful to the Mt. MagnUet
Road Board for placing the room at its dls
posal free of charge, and for the board's
assistance generali. She then invited Mr. J.
W. Atkinson (who was chairman of the board
when the room was granted to the branch)
to officially open the room. In complying. Mr.
Atkinson made eulogistic references to the
work being performed in the town and
throughout the State by the Country Wmene's
Association. Bhe wished the Mt. Magnet branch
every auccess.-'The aster tennis tournament
conducted by the Mt. Magnet Tennis Club
resulted as' follows:--Ledie doubles: les
dames Chapman and Ramsy ladies singles.
Miss Chester; men's singles A. Watson.--On
Aprl 24 members of the Mt. Magnet Rifle
Clob competed for the first stage of the Scoot
and Son trophy-over the 300 yards range, and
also over the 500 yards range for a sweep
stake. O. Parkinson and A. Cant are lead
i? for. the trophy with the possible while
the same two tied for the sweepstake with
L Pearson third.-On May 1 the local branch
of the A.LP. held its annual picnic and sports
at Wardathana Pool. which was full, as a
result of the recent rain. A very large crowd
was in attendance and the hospital buildtng
fend should receive a fillip as a remlt of the
day. as an profits go to the fund.
NIAB&WA May 3.-Mr. Sam Jupp, a Nahawa
pioneer, died in the Geraldton Hospital on
May 1 and was bured at Nabawa the same
afternoon. A very large gathering attended
the burial.-Rain would be welcomne again
now, as some very warm weather has been
experienced. Early crops would benefit--The
Nabawa Junior Farmers' Club elected as its
chairman Mr. L. Hipper and secretary. Mr.
Cliff Gould. at a meetins on April 26. Mr.
GOreen, chairman pf the Upper Chapmsn Road
Board. addressed the boys and advised the
new officers as to correct procedure.--For the
purpose of raising funds for school purposes
the Nabawa Parents and Citizens' Association
held the third of its successful card Parties
at the school on April 30.
PARKERVILLE. May 2.-During the past
month there have been good falls of rain
but long dry spells between falls have nulll
fled their good effects.-The annual tourna
ment of the Hills Tennis Association was
conducneted in fine weather during the week
end. Except for the final of the men's
singles handicap all events were completed.

sident of the Pithara Golf Club, opened the

Belford won the guessing of the lone drive.
The associates held their opening day on
May 5. when visitors from neighbourlng clubs
were in sttendancel.-The Country Women's
Association held ts annual meeting at East
Pithara on May 3. when Mrs. H. Anderson
was elected president, Mesdames Roberts and
WhettinPbam vice-presidents, Mrs. Gatti trea
surer and Mrs. G. Browning secretary.
TOODYAY. May 4.at Sundr the second
stage of the bandicap shoot for the Hodgkin
son trophy was fired for. leaving K. Wadding
ton and F. Cook tieing for the lead with a
total of 68.-On Monday night the Toodyay
troop of Light Horse held its first miitary
balln which was a big success. It was run
in conmunction with the Toodyay C.W.A. which
had charge of the supper arrangements. Many
visitors were noted from Northam and the
oLetropolis.-On Saturday night last a chil
dren's carnival party was held in the Town
ail, and was exceptionally well attended.
The children danced until 10.30. ater which
they had supper. and the adults danced until
midnight. The funds go to the Roman Catho
lic Churcht.--A delegates' meeting of the
Toodyay Football Association was held last
week, when the fixture list as drawn up by
a committee was presented and it wars de
cided that the first round oh the list be con,
firmed and the remainder left to the com
mittee. It s not yet certain whether Dol
gart can raise a team.-oLast week the dis
tane for the seador cycle race conducted by
the Toodray Cycle Club was doubled, being to
Key Farm and back twice. L. Chitty was the
wine, with R. Eery second and B. Crombi
third. G. Leeder won the Junior five mile
with N. errungton second and e. Lloyd third.
WANNAMAL and MOGIIMBEr. May 8.-A
terrific hailstorm passed over these districts
on the eening of May 4. Round about Wan
namal siding to a point three miles northward
received the brunt of the storm, the balt being
followed by a beneficial fail of rain, suicient
to start the brooks running. The amount of
rain received elsewhere, however, was nes
igible.-Top-dresslng. operations have been
completed and seeding oDerations have com
menced in some cases, while others are wait
ing for the next rain before starting. Feed is
getting away well but further ram would be
welcomsed.-Stock are hin good condition, and
there are a few lambs for fattening. Merino
lambs are not expected till the end of the
month and after.-Canon Needham, of Mel
bourne, visited the Moore River native sette
meit at Mogumber on May 3 and 4, accom
penied by the settlement chaplain (the Rev.
S. J. SDratllng. rector of Gingln).-Mrs. Maca
vee. of Moola0beenie was being taken to Perth
on May 5 suffering from acute appendicitis
when she collapsed. She was taken into Mrs.
Robinson's tea rooms at Chittering, but died
an hour later. Just after a doctor, who was
rushing to meet the vehicle in which she was
being credarried rrved' on the scene. Mrs.
Macavee, who was only 25 years old, was the
dau?nter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Olover, of Moo
ilabeenie. and leaves a husband and three
-young children.-At a meetng of the Chltter
Ing Road Board, held on May 7, it was de
cided to proceed with the building of a new
hall to serve the Bindoon Ward. The hall
will be erected near the Blnddon recreation
ground. about two miles north of the existing
hail which is in need of repair, and is too
small to meet the reouirements of the district.
-A table tennis tournament in aid of the
school funds was held in the Wannamal Hall
on the evening of May 7. During the evening
the president of the Wannamal Tennis Club
(Mr. E. H. Betts) presented the trophies to
the winners of the tennistournament held on
Easter Mobday--Miss Mercy Martin and
Mesrsc . Thompson and F. Bagley.
WADOONA, May 9.-The Waroona Golf
Club officially opened its 1938 season on May
8. about 75 members and visitors being pre
sent, and 60 players taking out cards. The
president (Mr. N. Elliott) welcomed the vysi
tors and Mr. A. W. Stanton, president of the
Harvey Golf Club, drove the first rall. A
12-hole stroke competition for men was won
by Jennings, of Cookernup, and a similar
event over nine holes lot ladies resulted in a
win for Miss Carmody. of the Waroona Club.
A very heavy thunderstorm broke shortly
after players had commenced their journey,
and conditions were very trying.-During the
afternoon 81 points of rain 1ell. It was a
very welcome downpour after a dry spell-The
Waroona Football Club has been re-formed.,
and intends to play in the Murray Association
this seasa instead of the Harvey-Brunswlck
Association. The election of officers resulted:

A. Hill; assistant secretary. Mr. C. Baker;
delegates to association. Messrs. ill and EH.

riott. The Warmoona recreation reserve will
be unfit for play this season owing to recent
re-grading, and Mr. H. McNeill has granted
the club use of land as a playing area.--The
Wezoona Rifle Club conducted a shoot for the
B. McNeill trophy with two bursts of 10 and
11 shots at 600 yards Mr. C. Dawe securing
the trophy with a net 98.-Several members
of the Waroona Junior Farmers' Club joined
with Harvey in a visit to Bunbury on April
30. for an inspection of the wheat bulk
handling silos and the butter factory.
