MERCANTILE ¡

West Australian Newspapers cricket
team won the Mercantile Association pre-
miership. This year has been a particu-
larly successful one for the Nèwspaper

team,, in all de-
partments. Not
only successful
from a team point
of view-but from
an individual one
also. Three play-
ers of this team
annexing associa-
tion trophies. Cap-
tain of the club, D.
("Mick") Carr was
awarded the trophy
for the best all
rounder in the
competition. Carr's
batting has been
consistent throughout the year, and he
has also returned some good bowling
figures. "Mick" Carr has had first-grade
experience in Victorian pennant cricket,
where he performed, reasonably well. Bis
figures for the season are splendid, and
he justly deserves the all-round prize.
The following figures speak for them-
selves. Batting average, 52.33. Bowling
34 wickets at 13.73.
Next comes Frank Crookes, right-hand
opening batsman. This young player is
a natural cricketer, and would do well
to look to a higher grade next year. Re-
cently Frank made a brilliant 147

overs, and this is
his highest score
in Mercantile As-
sociation Cricket.
Crookes wins the
batting average for
the association
with the good aver-
age of 53.5. Not
the least attractive
part of his game is
his spectacular slip
fielding. Crookes is
not excelled in this
position, and he
has been responsible for many mag-
nificent catches during the year. The
club, and also the Mercantile Associa-
tion, bowling averages fell to Charlie
Puckett. His has been an outstanding
effort. Game after game Puckett car-
ried the attack on his shoulders. A
tall right arm fast-medium bowler, he

deal of life from
~ matting wickets.
With his abiUty to
swing the ball, he
also turns an oc-
casional ball back
from the off, add-
ing greatly to his
effectiveness. Puc-
kett is a hard trier
and will bowl all
day if necessary.
He also had many
good batting per-
formances to his
credit, and his final
figures read very well. They are as fel-
lows:-Batting average, .26.5. Bowling, 66
wickets at 6.56. I am given to under-
stand that Puckett will try his hand in
first grade cricket, next season, probably
with West Perth, and his bowling will
create much interest.
Each an Outstanding
Baseballer. j
It is. an extraordinary fact that the
above three players are also baseballers
of note. "Mick" Carr captained the'last
two carnival teams, earning the approval
of all baseball fans for his splendid play.
Charlie Puckett is the outstanding
pitcher in W.A. today, and has the dis-
tinction of having represented ' three
States, South Australia as catcher, Vic-
toria as pitcher and short-stop, and W.A.
as first pitcher. Puckett's baseball career
has been a truly meritorious one, and he
will probably fill the position, of pitcher
in the Melbourne carnival to be held in
July. Frank Crookes played first base
for this State in the Adelaide carnival
two seasons ago. He played good ball
in his interstate debut. . Last season he.
missed selection, but should be a strong
contender for a place in this year's team.
Much of the W.A. Newspapers Cricket
Club's success is due to the untiring work
of the secretary, Len Brennan. This
popular clubman is noted' for his won-
derful keeness and efficiency, and he
deserves special congratulations. Bren-
nan has been entrusted with the man-
agership of several combined teams
thereby testifying the confidence which
be has earned in Association cheles.
