FOOTBALL.
ADELAIDE V. PORT.
The only senior fixture for Saturday was
the match between the Ports and Adelaides
an the Adelaide Oval. The weather was

About 2,000 persons witnessed the match,
which was started at 3.20 by the Ports kick
ing to the north goal against the wind. The
play waB slow and uninteresting from the
outset, but the Adelaides had tbe best of
matters, Sharland securing on the south-east
wing and entrusting to Darling in front. The
Prince Alfred College boy was equal to the
occasion, and first goal was the result of five
minutes' play. Until quarter-time the Ports
conld make no headway, Bushby, Buchan,
and Turnbull doing all the work. They
managed to prevent the Adelaides notching
goals, but when ends were changed the
result waB 1 goal 7 behinds to the
metropolitans, the Ports having suc
ceeded in getting the ball past half
way only about half a dozen times. With
the wind, which had somewhat dropped,
the seasiders were expected to do much
better, bnt the Adelaides added two behinds
before tbey could relieve the attack on their
posts. Some nice passing on and a good run
by Bushby enabled J. Fry to mark on the
gate wing, and after the ball had traversed
the whole of the ground Phillips (Adelaides)
ran behind to save his goal. Bushby put on
the second behind, and the Adelaides having
replied with two others half-time was called.
The game so far had been exceedingly slow,
the Porte altogether failing to display that
dash which gave them their win on the pre
vious Saturday ; but as the Adelaides' play
was very little better they had rather the
best, of matters and notched three behinds
before a fast rush led by Hooper enabled
Pettinger to entrust to R. Stephens right
in front and secure second goal. Clark
was responsible for the Adelaides' twelfth
behind and King for their thirteenth behind ;
then by playing to each other the Ports got
in their opponents' territory, where Le Leu
marked and kicked a fine goal. Before three
quarter time Pettlnger had managed third
goal for the ' red-and-blacks.' The las
quarter was devoid of anything like good
football, and although Bushby, Fry, Turn
bull, and Phillips worked hard for the Ports
the Adelaides added several behinds before
time waB called. The result of a very inferior
game of football was— Adelaides, 3 goals 19
behinds; Ports, 1 goal 5 behinds. For the
winners, Pettinger, Cox, Hooper, J. Stephens,
Mole, Bead, and Darling did most work ;
while the Ports were best represented by
Bushby, Buchan, Turnbull, Hills, Fry, and
Burton. During the third quarter Raven
struck R. Stephens a severe blow in the face
and knocked him down, but although the
game was at times rather rough there waB
only the one row. Mr. Sidoli was central
umpire.
