terday launched the 0.472-ton cruiser Zeven Pro
vincien — the first Dutch ship designed to cope with
an atom bomb attack. Work on the shin which will
he equipped with the most modern armament, will be
completed in about a year. The keel was laid in
]938, but sabotage prevented the Germans com
pleting it during the war.

HAMBURG REFLOATED
HAMBURG.— The wreck of
the old passenger liner Ham
burg, once the flagship of the

been raised from the floor of the
? Baltic and will be repaired at
Russian expense, according to
the Hamburg 'Die Welt.' The
27,000-ton liner, sunk in March,
1945 by a floating mine, was
raised after four years' work.

Korda will produce next year a
film of the life of Gilbert and
Sullivan. He has been granted
exclusive rights to use in the
film the most famous songs and
scenes from Savoy operas. Pro
duction will begin just as the
copyright on Sullivan's music
lapses. The copyright of Gil
bert's lyrics lasts until 1961.

NEW ATOMIC PILE
NEW YORK.— First US post
war atomic pile, which is
probably the most powerful in
the world, began operating yes
terday. The pile has been
built strictly for research and
is housed at Brookhaven Na
tional Laboratory. It is the
sixth atomic furnace now
operating in the US, and is said
to be several times more power
ful than the atomic energy pile
at Oakridge (Tennessee).

territories in S-E Asia, called

MOON TRIP TALKS
PARIS.— The possibilities of
an expedition to the moon will
be discussed at the first Inter
national Congress of Inter
Planetary Exploration, to be
held here from September 30 to
October 2. A French astrono
mer and air engineer (Prof.
Alexandra Ananon), the author
of a project for sending a roc
ket-driven 'space ship' to the
moon, will preside at the open
ing session.
