Stevens, Addaad-Horaaii
Favored For SA. Open
By DIVOT
R. F. Stevens and W. D. Ackland-Horman, the
national amateur champion, are equal favorites for
the State Open Golf Championship — formerly the
Close Championship— which will be contested over 36
holes of stroke play at Royal Adelaide tomorrow.
The change in ttesijyna
tion is really a misnomer,
as the event in effect is
only open to South Austra
lians.
Ackland-Horman won the title
last season and Stevens in 1948, but
Ackland-Horman. who won in 1947
after a tie with D. Denehey, was
also the winner In 1946.
Rymlll scored in 1939 and Hor
man was runner-up to the late F.
W. McMahon In 1938 and before that
again In 1933.
The national amateur ehamalan
wan his Brit title— the State
junior— in 1930, and a win to
morrow maid five him his 30th
championship event.'
The State amateur champion, W.
S. Shephard, is another competitor
who showed that he has gained in
confidence this year.
h. Destree is always a force to be
reckoned with in stroke rounds at
Beaton.
Veteran Willie Harvey. Royal Ade
laide professional, would be a popu
lar winner. Jim Mills ((Kooyonga).
has yet to produce top form this
year.
Fred Thompson, Glenelg profes
sional1. Is not competing. He has
not been in top physical condition
recently, and is wise to avoid the
strain of competitive play with such
i big programme ahead in the next
few weeks.
AMPOL £1,000
The 47 entries for the Ampol
£1.000 'comprise 27 professonals
from Victoria, 10 from NSW. eight
[rom SA, and one each from Queens
land and NZ.
The 79 holes stroke play will be
lUged at Glenelg nest Thmndmy,
Friday and Saturday, with the
specialists' match on Toe»day.
It is amazing to consider that
Pickworth. who was playing In the
Tarn o'Snanter tournament at Illin
ois,' US, on Wednesday, hopes to win
bis fifth successive Ampol £1,000 at
Qlenelg next week.
