Five-Stroke Win Bv Wilkin In
S.A. Golf Open

Kooyonga and University champion J. W.
S. Wilkin gained his first State title at Kooyonga
ni Saturday, when, with rounds of 74, 75, he
iron the SA open golf championship by five
strokes f rom W. D. Ackland Horman.
The scoring generally
was not good and al
though the course -was in
perfect condition there was
no run on the ball.
The sunshine appeared to
have an enervating effect on
the players and possibly the
story of the day is best told
by one of the gallery, who
after watching a bad bunker
shot by a scratch marker,
said: —
'Well it's a great day and
they are all enjoying it.'
At the end of play the
President of the SA Golf
Association (Mr. J. -£. Ash
ton) presented the' winner
with the Wighorn Salver,
which was contested for 'the
first time.
The salver was presented
last year by a visitor who was
amateur champion of Wor
cester in 1949 and is a mem
ber of the Wighorn Golfing
Society.
W. S. Shephard. who won
the title last year, began the
day with a shattering 8 and
never got 'in the groove.'
Rymill and Stevens, who were
85 and 83 respectively In the first
round, hit tlie ball well up to the
pin and both had satisfactory 74's
in the afternoon.
H. M. Threrizold. who was with
the leaders with 75 before lunch,
took 41 to reach the turn in the
afernoon.
Royal Adelaide professional
Willie Harvey was the best of the
PGA boys, compensating for an
81 with a 75 in the second round,
and finishing equal third with
DC3tree and Thredgold.
At the turn In the afternoon
round Wilkin was seven strokes
ahead of the field. He had played
accurate golf for a morning 74
—a stroke better than Thredgold
and two better than AcklandHor
man.
Wilkin chipped short at the
Brst in the afternoon for a shakv
S. put his tee shot 18 inches from
the pin at the 3rd and rolled down
an 8-footer for a 3 at the 5th.
He was out in 38 and the title
looked safe.
Ackland-Horman. who was
playing with Wilkin. had a woe
ful T at the 9th to reach the torn
In 41. but the former national
titleholder was ander 4's for the
next Bve hole* against Wilkin's
t«ro over, and only 4 strokes
behind. '
Horman hooked at the lath, bu'
recovered well and Wilkin through
in the right, also took 4 to get
down.
A terrific drive, a long second.
i chip and a putt saw Ackland
Horman pencil a birdie 4 at the
long 16th. to WUkin's orthodox S
and the difference was only 3.
At the next Horman's second
was 8 feet from the phi and Wil
Icin lay just off the cut. He ap
proached perfectly. Horman's putt
trickled past the hole and both
were down in 4. ,
At the 18th Wilkin put his sec
ond safely on. but AcklandHor
man hooked slightly to a dread
ful lie from where he had to use all
his skill and strength to get out
He took another before he

was home in 37 to Wilkin's 39
