BACK TO ENGLAND.
Duke and Duchess of Windsor Return
LONDON, Sept. 13.—The Duke and
Duchess of Windsor returned to England
yesterday from France. They travelled
on a destroyer and disembarked at
Portsmouth, where they were received
by a naval guard of honour and warmly
welcomed by the Commander-In-Chief
at Portsmouth, his staff and other
officials. They motored today to the
home of Major Edward Metcalfe at Ash-
down Forest, in Sussex, where they are
staying at present. Last night was spent

at Admiralty House, Portsmouth, in
order to avoid a blackout on the drive to
Ashdown Forest. Major Metcalfe ac-
companied the Duke when he was
Prince of Wales on his Indian and Japan-
ese tours in 1921-22 as an aide-de-camp
and, In the following year, was an equerry
to the Prince.
Not even high officials of His Ma-
jesty's household were aware of the ar-
rangements made for the Duke and
Duchess to travel to England, nor did they
know until late last night that they had
returned. The Duke had not previously
been in England since his abdication in
December, 1936. He married the Duchess
in June, 1937.
NEW YORK, Sept. 13.—The London
correspondent of the United Press says
it is reliably reported that the Duke in-
tends to travel to London from Sussex to
visit his mother, Queen Mary, at Marl-
borough House. It is believed that the
Duke and Duchess will later reside at
the London house of the Duke of Kent.
