STEVENS EXCELS IN
OPEN GOLF WIN

R. F. Stevens icon the SA Open golf championship for
the third year in succession at Royal Adelaide on Satur
day, leading W. D. Ackland-Horman by three strokes with
ttvo great rounds of 70, 72.
Stevens, who was
playinjr his first
cornpetitive ir () 1 f
since his return from the
UK tour with the Austra
lian team, first won this
title in 1943, so that he is
now holding it for the
fourth time.
His golf was not spec- j
tacular, but he showed an I
added control, a firmer
touch and an all-round
improvement to an al
ready good style.
Throughout the two rounds '
his chipping was uniformly
excellent, and he threw the ball
up to within three or four feet
and invariably downed the putt. |
Recoveries
In the afternoon his play was
marked by some superb re
coveries, and here again he
showed how much his experience
abroad has helped him.
He was 35 both ways in the
morning and began the after
noon with three 4's. followed by
birdie 3's at the 4th and 5th.
He dropped a stroke at the
short 7th. made up for It with
a birdie 3 at the 8th. and
finished the out run with a
normal 5.
Coming home he again dropped
a stroke at the short hole, the
12th. and misjudged his second
at the last
W. D Ackland-Horman played
consistent golf for a 73 in the
morning, was out in 35 in the
afternoon, and started home in
great style.
A couple of shots got away
from him. and at the last he hit
his second through.
With his putter he ran thp
ball over the bank from 60 feet
sway, leaving himsell dead for
a Tt home and a 72.

Foot was In third place after
rounds of 75 and 73 while L.
Dcstree. who frittered away
some strokes in the morning.

After a 77 in the mornins he
whs out in a glorious 34 in thp
afternoon, but lost touch, taking
40 to come home.
He finished first professional
and equal fifth with Knoyonga's
J. W. S. Wilkin and M. E
Warner from Grange
