Protest By
Candy
LONDON, Sun.-The Aus
tralian, Don Candy, cleared the
court to allow the 18-year-old
American, Ham Richardson,
to score the winning point in
the final of the Kent tennis
championship yesterday.
The season's strangest tennis
finish came as Candy yelled to
his opponent, "hit it that way"
-and then marched determin
edly off the court in the other
direction.
Candy's action was in protest
against a bad line decision given
against Richardson for the
previous point. Richardson
won 6-2 8-6 6-2.
Certain that he had lost the
point and the match, Candy
was running to the net with his
hand outstretched when he
heard the call "out." He turn
ed, gestured as if to shake
hands with the offending lines
man and then threw away the
next point and match.
In the men's doubles final the
Americans, R. Savitt and G.
Mulloy, beat E. W. Sturgess
(South Africa) and Candy 6-1
6-3,
British Women
