HIGHWAY
DARWIN ALICE SPRINGS
ROAD,
Construction on a new all weather
highway between Alice Springs and
Birdum will probably start within a
few weeks. Major Dickson of the
Military Survey ; Corps, with Mr. A.
E., Toyer of the New South Wales
Main ; Roads Board, the Chief High-
ways Engineer of the South Austra-
lian Government, and , another en-
gineer Mr. D. D. Smith have just
completed a survey of the proposed
route.
Major Dickson left for Canberra
to place, the result of his reconnais
'sance before the Defence Gabiinet
which will consider the proposals
early this week.
If assent to the proposal is given
by the Cabinet work will begin - im-
mediately as to make the road us-
able in the next wet ; season.
Military authorities said during
the week end that the resources pi
three states would be ^used in an at-
tempt to complete the highway be-
fore the next wet season begins./ ;
The New South. Wales Main
Roads Board would have (he re-
sponsibility of constructing the nor-
thern portion. Queensland 'Would be
allocated the central portion« white
South Australia would make avail-
able the engineers and equipment br
that state for the southern section
of the road.
It was stated that the road would
be of immense military importance, ,
enabling food and equipment to be
rushed to Darwin in the event Of an
atack or an attempted invasion by
any foreign power.
. The iroad will tie open to the use
ot Civilians, it was stated.
Practically all the quipment and
labour necessary fe* the construction
of the highway will be brought from
the states > assisting in its construc-
tion.
