Matson's Early
Helper Dies
W. D. ("Boona") Howson.
who died yesterday at the age
of 69, was largely responsible
for the launching of the late
Phil Matson on his football
career.
The late Mr. Howson. early in
the century, helped Matson,
then a champion breaststroke
swimmer, in his training for a
trip to New Zealand.
He persuaded Matson to take
on football to harden himself
and before long Matson proved
that he had exceptional prowess
as a footballer.
Matson became an outstand
ing player and a shrewd, success
ful coach.
The late Mr. Howson disting
uished himself as a yachtsman
and took a keen interest in foot
ball, but swimming was his
great love.
He and a few other enthusiasts
founded the Claremont Amateur
Swimming Club.
As far back as 1904 he
established a world under-water
swimming record of 110 yards.
As lessee of the Claremont
Baths for many years, he was
widely known.
Two sons, Les and Arthur, dis
tinguished themselves in sport.
