Rainbow-hued jacket in
crochet
. This lighthearted jacket for off-duty
hours was made from scraps of pastel-
toned wools highlighted with vividly rich
and deeper-toned wools.
MATERIALS: 3oz. green 4-ply
wool for borders; scraps of
pastel shades—about 2oz. pink, 2, 3,
and 4-ply in various shades; 3oz.
mauve 3-ply, and ½oz. mauve 2-ply;
3oz. blue 4-ply and ½oz. blue 3-ply;
about 2oz. of green 4-ply in 3 dif-
ferent shades. Scraps of red, purple,
brown, maroon, rose. navy, orange,
each being less than ¼oz. No. 10
or No. 11 crochet hook.
In order to achieve the desired
effect, the pastel colors were
arranged in groups, with darker
colors between the groupings. For
example, mauve, pink, blue, and
green were used, then navy; mauve,
pink, blue, green were repeated,
then maroon; and so on.
In this way all the small scraps
of every color were utilised. The
colors were joined by crocheting the
last 3in. of color just finished and
first 3in. of wool of new color to-
gether for one treble-stitch, and the
ends were cut off when each piece
of the garment was completed.
For the fronts, sleeves, and poc-
kets, each color was commenced 3
squares from the beginning of row
and finished 3 squares from the be-
ginning of next row; thus each color
was used for one row at a time. In
the back of jacket each color was
carried 12 squares into each row.
