WOMEN GOVERNORS
Why Not?
Dr. Marion Phillips, the Australian
woman member of the House of Com-
mons, has expressed the opinion that
she would like to see New South Wales
and Tasmania, who will be having
new Governors appointed soon, sug-
gests that women be appointed.
"A Governor," said Dr. Phillips to a
representative of the Adelaide "Regis-
ter," "is a monarch's representative,
and a monarch may either be a man
or a woman. Therefore there is no
reason why either a man of a woman
should not represent a monarch. So
far Britain has not appointed any
women Governors," she added, "and
there are no women in the diplomatic
corps or the consular corps. If men
and women work on equal terms poli-
tically, there is no reason why they
should not be equal as far as the ap-
pointing of Governors is concerned. --
would be all important step forward
in breaking down one of the last bar-
riers before women in public life. One
of the Governor's main duties is social
entertainment. Who could be more
suitable than a woman for this work?
Women have always been organisers of
social functions. And what country is
easier to govern than Australia?"
