FINED FOR
RECORD
ATTEMPT
DARWIN-A motorist who
traversed 965 miles of
the Stuart Highway between
Darwin and Alice Springs,
on Thursday at an average
speed of 90 m.p.h., pleaded
guilty in the Alice Springs
Court yesterday to charges
of dangerous driving, driving
at an excessive speed, driv
ing without a Northern Ter
ritory licence and driving a
car not registered in the
Northern Territory.
He was Leslie Taylor (35),
who had made an attempt
on the 1000-mile road record
and had covered 965 miles
in 101 hours when a
mechanical 'breakdown com
pelled him to give up the
attempt.
While pleading guilty,
Taylor said that other road
users had not been incon
venienced and he had taken
care on blind corners and on
hill crests. He said his
driving had been fast but
safe.
The magistrate imposed
fines totalling £18, with £2
costs.
Later, Taylor said that he
and his companion, Richard
Rendle, intended driving to
Mount Isa, about 800 miles,
and placing the car on the
train there to-day en route
to Brisbane.
