SORRY NO LABOUR
WOMAN M.P.
Dr. Marion Phillips, M.P.,
Says Victory Incomplete
LONDON, Monday.—"I have only
one criticism to offer regarding
the Australian Labour victory," said
Dr. Marion Phillips, the Australian-born
woman Labour M.P. today.
"I have not yet seen the record of a
Labour woman's success. A Labour Govern-
ment without a woman in the Cabinet, or
a Labour Party without a woman on the
benches, is still incomplete; otherwise the
triumph is so over-
whelming that it is
with the greatest de-
light I send a message
of good luck nnd long
life to the new Labour
Cabinet.
"Labour's victory is
beyond the rosiest ex-
pectations of Aus-
tralian-born people in
Britain, while the Bri-
tish Labour people are
especially elated.
"The British Labour
Government is playing
an increasingly great
part in establishing world peace. It is con-
stantly calling on the dominions for their
active co-operation. How much closer will
the relationship be now that Labour has
control in both countries?
MUTUAL PROBLEMS
'The great problems of English and
Australian statesmanship are the develop-
ment of mutual trade and the position of
migration. I look to the solution of Aus-
tralian problems regarding the sale of food
products and raw materials, such as wool,
in the co-operation of centralised purchase
and marketing, which will promote an in-
crease of Australian productivity without un-
duly burdening the British consumers.
"Such schemes should be more easily de-
veloped with Labour Cabinets, while migra-
tion can be considered with a full under-
standing of the risk of increasing unemploy-
ment and cheapening of labour in Australia."
