Mr. .1. Swoon, Home Missionary, vmtod
this district from Fort Lincoln on Sunday,
and preached at the different chapels. On
tlondftv eveninsr in the Lipson Chapel he cave
a lecture on Homo Mission Work,' and exhi
bited a aeries of dissolving views of Scriptural
incidents. He repeated the lecture at Turn by
Chapel on Tuesday ovening, and also at
^Dilieo Valo on Wednesday. Proceeds of the
lectures go towards tho Home Mission Fund
aud for the purchase of a circuit horse.

On Wednesday evening s farewell social was
pvon to Mr. S. Carter, thu schoolmaster, who

for his services during the year that ho has
been here, and wishing him prosperity in the
future.
Two villagers have left here for Romeo.

BUTE, June 27.
On Wednesday, June 27, a concert was
held at Bute in aid of the cricket association.
Mr. Coltman's Harmonic Society, from Snow-
town, and Mr. W. A. Jones, our popular
schoolmaster, rendered valuable assistance.
Special interest was taken in a pianoforte duct
given by little Miss Rebie Jones and Master
Brewster Jones. which received an imperative
encore. Master Brewster Jones played in a
masterly manner a pleasing pianoforte march
eutitled "The Bute March," composed en-
tirely by himself.
MAITLxVND.Ji:.\e23.
T.ie only amusement on tho holiday was a
football u::itch between Maitland and Point
Ptani; Station. It w.xi played at Maitland
aud resulted in an es»y win for the natives
with I ?oals and 3 behlnds to nil. Hughes,
Branlield, Ncwchurch, and McGrath played
best for tho winners, and Sanders (2) and
Spender for tho home team.
PORT VICTORIA, Jcxe 23.
The Mutual Improvement Society continues
to flourish and a: every nuxtimj fresh members
are enrolled. On Friday night the Society
had an 'open night.' Visitors arrived from
tho neighbouring towns, and the hall was well
tilled. A varied programme wa3 gone through
suet.-essfr.lly. ilr. Charles Willing read an
esiay on '* Smokiug,' which he characterized
as a *' very desirable bad habit.' An animated
discussion took place on the totalizator, which
was not concluded when time was called.
JAMESTOWN, Jr.\E 23.
At the last meetin? of the Jamestown
Literary Society Dr. \V. B. Aitkcn pvve an
interesting lecturctto on 'The Eye. ' The
upper room of tho Institute was crowded, and
the Iccturttto was li.steued to with a 5re.1t deal
of pleasure, the doctor explaining tno struc
tun% &c, of the eye in a very clear and lucid
manner, und by diagrams, &c, showing the
audience tho different tests of tho eyesight
At the clu&) the doctor answered a number of
questions, and he was accorded a hoarty vote
of thanlv-s. Several musical selections were
also given.
On Saturday last the KnightHbridgc
Ln..:ro*.se Club met the Janicatown Club on the
local grounds. Tho ground, taken altogether,
was in a good state for play, and the result of
the game was a win for tlio KnightMbridge by
:i goals to 2 thrown by tho local player*. In
tho evening a social was tendered to tho
visitors when a p!cn?ant couple of lionra was
siA-at in singing aud toasting the visitors end
the losing: team. On Monday the tea in*
again met, when tiie local players scored 5
goals to tho Knightsbridgu ?_'. ThoKnights
bridgc, however, worn playing with tlireo

the utmoit interest in the contest. In tho

the Institute Hall, after which they took their

Although £500 has l-con piacetl on tho Esti
mates and a site pegged out for a school at
Poonindie, nothing has yet I)cun doao in the
way of building, a:irl forty or lifty children in
the locality arc growing up in igniorance. A
temporary place could bo obtained to tench in,
and it \* felt to 1« a disgrace to the Education
Department that a teacher was not provided
