LICENSING BOOKMAKERS
Strong Protest By Congrega
tional Union
In protest against the proposal .to license
bookmakers, the Chairman of the Congre
gational Union of S.A. (the Rev. Edward J.
Kiek) writes: —
'Those of us who are concerned for the
maintenance of the moral standards of the
people are profoundly distressed that any
proposal for the licensing of bookmakers,
should be considered at this crisis. 'The
representatives of the Methodist and Pres-
bytcrian Churches have already protested,
also the W.C.T.U., the Christian Endeavour
movement, and many other important
bodies.
'I am now directed by the executive com-
mittee of the Congregational Union to voice
our solemn protest against the contem-
plated legislation. We shall certainly lay
ourselves out to destroy any Government
or any party which thus identifies itself
with interests hostile to the highest welfare
of the State. The true wealth of the State
is in the character of its citizens. In the
name of the churches I have the honour to
represent, and in the name of thousands of
thoughtful and public-spirited men and
women, I. appeal to the Government and to
all members of Parliament to refrain from
this thing.'
