THE DAILY PAPER.
How it is Produced,

strongly than ever before!' That is the
record of The Register. For an explanation
the reader may turn to the first page of
this issue. He will see below the heading
'Vol: lxxv. No. 20,000,' indicating that on
20,000 mornings, in just a little longer
period than the history of the State, The
Register has brought its budget of news to
the homes of the people. The story has
frequently been told of how The Register
had its birth in the world's metropolis on
June 18, 1838 — a little more than six

South Australia— and how the second num-
ber was printed on June 3, 1837, in a
pine hut on town acre 56 Hindley street,
with a Stanhope hand press that
is still a treasured possession of

the office. For some time the paper was
published at irregular intervals, owing to
the scarcity of labour in the infant pro-
vince. Afterwards publication was made
weekly, then twice a week, and now for
60 years— since January 1, 1850— The Regis-
ter has appeared daily, and with one ex-
ception it is the oldest journal in Austral-
asia.
