Hollywood Filth
Incenses British
London, Sat: Extra police-were rushed to the
Piccadilly area last night after a smoke bomb had
Jbeen thrown in the stalls of a leading West End
cinema at the end of a film depicting fighting
between Jews and British jn Palestine before the
birth of the State of Israel.
London County Council closed the cinema tonight because
of demonstration. íllm. "Sword in "the Desert," a Holly-
wood opus, has been called anti-British.
LCC's reason for the closure was the risk of further dis-
orders over the weekend.
Leaflets bearing the imprint of the Union Movement (led
by founder of prewar British Union of Fascists, Sir Oswald
Mosley) had been distributed outside the -cinema. They
called the film an 'insult to British dead."
On receiving the closure order, the manager shut his
box office and turned away would-be patrons queueing out-
side the cinema.
Film, which had been shown 7 times to about 4000
people, was to have had a 3 weeks' run.
y A middle-aged woman who
was one of the last to see the
film said: "If I had known
what it was about I wouldn't
have gone.
"I don't think any child
under 16 should be allowed
to-see it."
A Middle East veteran
said: "I think the film is
authentic, and I enjoyed it.*'
Reflecting the general at-
titude in London, Daily
Mail's-critic wrote: "It is my
considered and emphatic
opinion that this film does
not merit oublie performance
in this country at present."
