GERMAN NAMES.
NOMENCLATURE COM-
MITTEE APPOINTED.
"The Mail" Campaign
Further Advanced.
Definite steps towards the eradication
of the German names from the map of
South Australia have been taken by the
Government in the appointment of a
nomenclature committee. This follows
the adoption by the Assembly of Mr.
Ponder's motion affirming the desire-
ability of making the changes. As the
member responsible acknowledged, 'The
Mail' played a great part in the cam
paign. The Premier (Hon. Crawford
Vaughan) informed a representative of
this paper this morning that Messrs. E.
M. Smith, I.S.O. (Surveyor-General), E.
Cockburn (Secretary of the Railway
Standing Committee and author of 'No-
menclature of South Australia. and H.
C. Talbot, of the Survey Office, had been
selected. It was the wish of the Ministry
that the gentlemen should consider, the
names of all places in the State which
appeared to be of enemy origin. New
names of British or of South Australian
native origin were to be suggested. Con
sideration would be taken of names such
as Stirling North and Stirling East,
which, on account of their similarity, led
to confusion. In this connection the
postal officials would be consulted, as
South Australia had names used in the
other States.
