RELIGIOUS.
The conference of the clerical and lay delegates invited to.
meet the Bishop of Newcastle for the purpose of initiating
Synodical action in his diocese, was held last month in the Hall
of the School of Arts, Morpeth. The Bishop presided. The
Rev. W. W. Dove, of Jerry's Plains, and Mr. E. C. Close, acted
as clerical and lay secretaries ; and the-Hon. James Docker,
M.L.C., chairman of committee.
The Church of Saint John has been consecrated hy the Right
Rev. Dr. Thomas, Bishop of Goulburn. The church has cost
£1,500, and has been raised almost entirely through the munifi-
cence of Mrs. Wilkie, widow of the late Captain J. L. Wilkie,
of the 12th Regiment, who died at Burrangong whilst in com-
mand of the troops there.
The foundation stone of a new Church of England edifice, at
Wellington, was laid on the 13th by Miss Gardiner, the daughter
of an old resident of the district.
The foundation stone of a church for a Wesleyan congrega-
tion was laid at Albury on the 30 th ult.
