THE HOBART POST OFFICE.
It has been decided, after long delays,
by the Minister for Home Affairs to take
over the new Hobart General Post Office,
which was erected by the State Govern-
ment at a cost of between £30,000 and
£35,000. Lieutenant-Colonel Owen, the
Federal Inspector-General of Public
Works, has returned from Tasmania,
where, while on his holiday, he took occa-
sion to look over the new G.P.O. and re-
port upon it for Mr Dugald Thomson's
information. On his recommendation the
Minister has authorised the expenditure
of a sum of money which will cover the
cost of internal fittings and enable the
Postmaster-General to take possession at
a comparatively early date. The Secre-
tary of the Home Department, Mr David
Miller, said that the Federation was not
responsible for the erection of this enor-
mous and unnecessary building. It was
merely taken over by the Federal Govern-
ment as transferred property.
