TAMAR HEMATITE IRON COM-
PANY.
PERFECT SUCCESS OF THE FURNACE
THREE GOOD CASTS ON SATUR-
DAY.
It is with great satisfaction we have to
chronicle the complete success of the
Tatnar Hematite Iron Company in the
manufacture of pig iron from the ore.
The large furnace was charged and lighted
on New Year's Day, and we received
the following telegram from Mr A. H.
Swifte ; —
GEORGE TOWN, 2nd January.
Complete success with the big furnice.
Three good casts of Iron to-day.
This is the best news it has ever been
our privilege to record. It denotes the
commencement of a new era in Tasmania's
prosperity. The Tamar Hematite Com-
piny is at present a limited proprietary,
their operation up to the present point
hire been to a great extent experimental ;
but this success will urge them to further
effort, and the number of their furnaces
will be at once increased. To the man-
aging engineer, Mr A. H. Swifte, great
credit is due. He has exhibited both
skill and foresight, and to him undoubtedly
belong! the honor of having first made
pig iron in payable quantity from Tas-
manian iron ore. TueTasmania Charcoal
Iron Company run the metal. so did the
Ilfracombe Company, and more recently
the Derwent Iron Company in Hobart
Town but these have been merely fancy
experiments, and with the first few pigs
operations were suspended. Mr Swifte
has produced the iron in a practical man-
ner, and we have no reason to doubt that
his furnace will continue producing it for
many along day. Hotter success than we
with him he cannot possibly wish him-
self.
