I
The ofl;cial opening of the
Torbay Agricultural Hall took
place on Friday of last week, t the ce
remony being performed by the Mayor
of Albany (Mr- H. C. Sims) who, at
the invitation of the committee, drove
out with Mrs, Sims for the purpose.
A gloriously fine and moonlight night
conduced to a large attendance and
by half-past 7 nearly everyone in the
district, upwards of 150 persons, were
present.
Mr. T. Marshall, chairman of the
committee, briefly introduced Mr.
Sims, saying he was eure everyone
was pleased to see him present.
Mr. Sims said that if it gave them
as much pleasure as it did him and
Mrs. Sims to be there then all were
pleased indeed. He did not consider
that the business men of Albany visi
ted the outlying districts enough but
if they knew the advertisement it wo
uld be, considering that nearly all the
trade was done in Albany, they wo
uld come out more frequently. He
congratulated the committee and sub
scribers on their fine hall,' and said he
hoped it would be a source of end - j
less .pleasure and the means of good -
fellowship. He regretted the absence
of Mr. J. Rutherford, the secretary,
who was unable to be present
through illness in his family. The
Mayor then formally declared the hall
open for the use and pleasure of the
inhabitants of the district.
The chairman proposed a vote of
thanks to Mr. Sims, -which was,, car -
ried with acclamation.
A dance occupied attention for the
rest of the night, the first item on the
programme being a quadrille danced
by the members of the committee and
their ladies. Dancing was intersper -
sed with songs, recitations, etc.,
which were contributed by Mr. H.
Sims, Miss Lacey, and Messrs. Perry,
H. Buckeridge, and Fennell. Music
for the dancing was provided by Mes
srs. Grayson, N. Puls, Perry, and
Cook.
The hall, which is a well-built
structure of jarrah, 22ft. by 35ft.,
was tastefully decorated with flags,
bunting, etc. It is situated on a
spot which was once the centre of a
large timber milling industry and now
has quite a park-like appearance. The
committee are to be congratulated on
being able to start, not only out of
debt, but with about £13 in hand
towards future extensions. The mern -

Knapp, T. H. Fennell, W. J. Fennell,
W. Grayson, G. Clarkson, W. Reilly,

ridere acted as secretary at the open -
