BROTHERS PLAY FOR
DIFFERENT STATES
The first match of the 1939 Claxton Shield carnival games
will provide a spectacle probably unique in Australian sport
when Charlie Puckett, No. 1 pitcher for W.A., opposes his bro
ther Jim, No. 1 for South Australia.
The Puckett family must have set a number of records in
baseball as, at one time, the four brothers were playing in
the same team. Tom and Charlie acted as a reversible battery,
Bert at short-stop and Jim as utility man.
Charlie, in his second
year of baseball, played for
South Australia as catcher,
to Ron Sharpe.
After playing in six
Shield series he transferred
to Victoria, pitched for that
State in 1937.
He represented a third
State when he played for
Western Australia last year
Brother Jim's progress
was not as fast but some
consider that he closely ap
proaches Charlie's standard
now.
Like Charlie, who is pro
bably the finest catcher in
Australia but too valuable
as a pitcher to take the
mask for us regularly, Jim
has outstanding ability as
a short-stop.
