A NEW CHURCH AT ALMA.
The new Congregational Church at Alma
was opened and dedicated on Saturday
afternoon. It is an ornate building of
white stone from a local quarry, and will
accommodate about 160 persons. It has
been erected to repiace the old church,
which was inconveniently situated, about
a mile and a half from the site of the
new edifice. The old. building had become
so dilapidated that it was decided to pull
it down and rebuild. The Rev. P. H.
Rowland, who was to have presided on
Saturday, was unable to attend through
illness, and the Rev. W. Jarrett, of Mount
Lofty, a former pastor, took his place at
the opening ceremony. A service fol-.
lowed, at which the Rev. A. E. Johnson
presided and delivered the dedicatory ad
dress, and the Rev. W. Jarrett offered the
dedicatory prayer. Mr. Leslie S. Smith
(Chairman of the Congregational Union)
read the Scripture lesson, and conveyed
greetings to the congregation on behalf of
the Union. Greetings were also given by
the Rev. H. Haworth (Kapunda Congrega
tional Church), the Rev. L. Keipert (Ham
Iey Bridge Methodist Church), and Mr.
J. Bell (secretary Hamley Bridge Congre
gational Church). There was an over
flowing congregation. Tea was provided
in the local institute. On the following
day service was conducted in the after-
noon by the Rev. W. Jarrett, and in the ~
evening by Mr. L. S. Smith. Extra ac-
commodation had to be provided at both
services for the large congregations.
