BEACONSFIELD
COUNCIL
The Beaconsfield Council yesterday de-
cided to ask the Deputy State Librarian
(Mr. C. C. McShane) to meet the coun-
cil to discuss certain aspects of' the free
library movement.
A deputation of citizens, introduced by
Cr. Kelb, waited on the council and
urged that the municipality link with
the City's Councl's library movement.
They pointed out the great loss the dis-
trict suffered when the Launceston Pub-
lic Library, which had served the muni-
cipality for many years, was handed over
to the council in connection with the
State Library movement. There were
over 100 subscribers to the Public Lib-
rary in the district.
Citizens would like to be able to go
to the library when in the city and get
their books, but would also like to see
a depot established at Beaconsfield.
It was decided to ask Mir. McShane to
meet the council at its next meeting.
I think it is high time we had a tim-
ber toll to compensate us for the dam-
agee carters are doing to the roads," said
Cr. Bird, when giving notice of motion
that tlhe council impose a toll over the
whole mlunicipality and that roads be
closed to timber carting for July, Aug-
ust. and September. He said the coun-
cil was losing hundreds of pounds in
revenue over timber carting. He also
ojected to timber being stacked on the
side of roads because of the state table
drains were left in.
The Commissioner for Transport (Mr.
VWilson) advised the council that no de-
flnite new classification of roads would
be prepared until the necessary legisla-
tion was passed.
Mr. N. Campbell, M.H.A., reaffirmed
his statement that the Commissioner had
shown him a new classification which it
was intended to submit to Parliament
for ratification in September. He ex-
pressed disappointment at the council's
decision to see a copy of the list before
considering his application for recommen-
dation that the Exeter-Winkleigh Rd.
be included.
The corrrespondence was tabled.
The Director of Public Works (Mr. G.
D. Balsille) wrote, stating that action
might soon be taken to procure wheeled
tractors for other than defence pur-
poses, and asked if the council would
require any of the machines, including
those for fitting in graders. Mr. Bal-
sille also asked if the council wished to
secure any surplus plant being made
available by the Allied Works Council.
It was agreed to write to the Director
and ask what class of plant would be
available.
Expenditure of £75 on the Holwell-
Winkleigh Rd. had been approved by the
Minister for Lands and Works (Mr.
Brooker), the council was advised.
Following receipt of a letter from the
Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board,
stating that upon receipt of formal
application a survey of Sandy Beach
drainage would the carried out at the
expense of the council, it was resolved
to ask the approximate cost involved.
The board also wrote stating that it
could make a preliminary survey of the
West Tamar water supply from the Sup-
ply River for Exeter, Gravelly Beach
and surroundling districts, at the coun-
cil's expense, but as the scheme was
so comprehensive it would require the
full-time services of a surveyor and
party for several weeks. The board
would at present find it difficult to pro-
vide these officers.
It was decided to leave the matter un-
til after a proposed visit ny the coun-
cil engineer, Mr. G. I. Davey.
Cr. Pearn was nominated as represent-
tative on the Licensing Bench.
It was decided to go ahead with the
installation of lights at Bald Hill.
Council agreed to provide £25, pro-
vlded the mining company contributed a
similar amount, for expenditure on the
road to the copper and gold recovery
plant near Swift's Jetty, Beaconsfield.
The Minister for Lands and Works (Mr.
Madden) advised that the department
would make £50 available on condition
that the council or the company find
the other £50 necessary to clear and
form the road. The council resolved that
if the money was spent the road should
be open as a public thoroughfare.
Cr. Freeland gave notice of motion
that the council adopt the Municipal
Association's proposed superannuation
scheme for municipal employees.
