To-day marks the 109th anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson, and the monument in Trafalgar-square (one of the finest open spaces in London) will be the scene of a great patriotic demonstration, which will carry much deeper significance than is associated with the celebration in times of peace. The decorations of the column will include wreaths in memory of the British sailors who went down in the Australian submarine and those who were lost in the North Sea. This column, which is 145ft high, is of granite, and was erected by voluntary subscriptions at a cost of about £45,000.
