  5. THE NEW DITCH-DIGGER ON THE PEEL ESTATE.

    This huge machine which has been imported by Harris, Scar[?]e and Sandovers Ltd., to the order of the Western Australian Government at a cost of £7,000, is employed on the drainage excavation work at the Peel Estate. It is claimed that the machine can dig about 1,000 cubic yards a day, and can go down to a depth of about 32ft. It is known as a steam dragline excavator, and instead of shovelling forward like a steam navvy it is dragged backward towards its engine.
