On September 18. 1892. Arthur Bayley, an experienced bushman, who for a considerable time had been prospecting for gold throughout the North-west. Murchison and Yilgarn districts, arrived at Southern Cross and handed an application to the Warden (John Michael Finnerty) for a Reward Claim. In company with John Ford, he had found what he described as "payable gold in a wilder- j ness." the centre that is now Coolgardie. To substantiate his application Bayley exhibited a parcel containing 500 ounces (one lump weighing 50 ounces) of gold, of the estimated value of £2.000.
