  11. MODERN GASOMETER CONSTRUCTION.

    In Fitzroy, at the corner of Smith street and Queen's Parade, the Metropolitan Gas Company has nearly completed the building of one of its largest gasometers, with a capacity of 2,750,000 cubic feet. On the left is shown the old gasometer, which was erected nearly 60 years ago, and gave good service until 1920. The new structure which takes its place will be finished in time for the winter service. lt has four "lifts," each 35ft.; deep, and contains' 750 tons of steel, the structural portion of which came from Newcastle (N.S.W.).
