REPORTS THAT U S SHOCK TROOPS HAVE LANDED IN THE MARSHALL ISLANDS and that fierce fighting is in progress signal the first landing by the Allies in Japanese territory (as distinct from occupied territory), for the Marshalls were granted to the Japanese under League of Nations mandate. Photograph at left shows US Marines in action in the Gilberts, the near by group of islands, during their recent capture of that strategic base. Right: American planes have been battering Japanese installations in the many atolls comprising the Marshall Islands for weeks.
