    THE WAR COMES CLOSER HOME. From time to time reports have appeared in the press of the discovery of enemy mines in Australasian waters. Many narrow escapes have been reported. The disaster to the Wi[?] through striking one of these objects is the most recent ease that has occurred. The mine shorn in the left-hand picture was photographed off the southern coast of Tasmania just before it was destroyed. The picture on the right shows the huge column of smoke and water sent up when the dangerous globe was exploded by rifle fire. We are indebted for these interesting views to the courtesy of Mr. G. C.   3. FOUND ON THE BATTLEFIELD.

    These Pictures reached us by the last mail from various soldiers who found them on the battlefields of France, and sent them to "The Chronicle" in the hope of their being identified and claimed by relatives of the owners. Some of them bear unmistakable marks of shrapnel. 1. Found by Private A. Smith. 2. One of four sent by Private L. Bellman. 3 and 4. Two of five found by Private Willoughby. 5. Sent by Miss R.
