The papers were donated to the National Library of Australia by Jean Tahija's son Dr Sjakon Tahija in 2004.

The collection comprises correspondence, family photographs, diaries and drafts of Tahija's autobiography An Unconventional Woman, 1998.

The arrangement of the papers is in the order created by Jean Tahija and the Tahija family. The photograph album was assembled by the children of Jean Tahija after her death.

Biographical Note

Jean Tahija (nee Walters) was born in East Brunswick, Victoria on 3 February 1916. After graduating as a dentist, she worked for five years at the Melbourne Dental Hospital. In 1946, Jean Tahija married Lieutenant Julius Tahija whom she had met in 1942 whilst he was serving with the Netherlands East Indies army. In 1947, Jean Tahija joined her husband in Indonesia where she remained for the rest of her life. Julius Tahija became a politician and successful businessman. Jean Tahija published her autobiography An Unconventional Woman in 1998 and a further volume in 2001 entitled Memoirs: conventional and unconventional. She died in 2001.

Series 1. Correspondence, 1942-2001

Letters from Julius Tahija to Jean Tahija, 1942-1947 (File 1) - Box 1

The letters 1942-1945 span the period of the Tahija's courtship whilst Julius Tahija was serving in the army and were written in Brisbane and Cairns. The 1946 and 1947 letters come mainly from Indonesia. The collection includes one letter from Jean Tahija dated 7 July 1942.

Correspondence concerning An Unconventional Woman, 1996-2001 (File 2) - Box 1

Contains letters from Tahija's publisher, lawyers, media contacts, letters from friends and fan mail. Also includes three letters pertaining to publication of Memoirs: conventional and unconventional.
