Introduction

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, promissory notes, legal and financial documents, many of them addressed to Gordon and the other trustees of The Empire newspaper, 1857-1859. The correspondents include Henry Parkes. There are also documents concerning a loan to the government of Fiji (1872-1873) and a memorandum regarding operations of gas companies in England (1867).

Biographical Note

Samuel Deane Gordon was a Sydney merchant, pastoralist and politician. He was one of the trustees of The Empire , the newspaper managed and edited by Henry Parkes following its collapse in 1858.

Includes a letter (undated but c1859) to Gordon and others from Henry Parkes advising of his decision to stop publication of The Empire as a result of financial difficulties; account statements relating to The Empire ; an inventory prepared by an officer of the Insolvent Court of personal effects at "Helene", Ryde (undated but c1857-1859); and an indenture for a property lease from Thomas Chaplin Breillat and John Henry Black to Henry Parkes dated 1 April 1857. There are also documents concerning a loan to the government of Fiji (1872-1873) and a memorandum regarding operations of gas companies in England (1867).
