Historical Note

The utopian communal settlement of New Australia was founded by journalist and trade unionist William Lane in 1893 near Asuncion, Paraguay. After a schism in the original colony, Lane set up a new colony, Cosme, 72 kilometres south of New Australia.

Includes a 'Plan for village organisation, unanimously adopted as the Constitution of Cosme on Tuesday Sept 1, 1890', signed by William Lane; cuttings from various newspapers and journals relating to the colony; four personal letters from Henry Connelly at 'Colonia Nueva Australia' to Geo. Reeve in Sydney, which include news of the colony (1923-1928); two letters from Mary Gilmore, Sydney, to Geo. Reeve (1927) regarding printed materials relating to Cosme; letters from Geo. Reeve to Ferguson regarding material relating to the colony; a booklet of biographical articles on William Lane, published following his death in 1917; several letters relating to Ferguson's search for papers relating to the colony and miscellaneous notes made by him about the collection.
