Administrative History
The Women's Electoral Lobby (WEL) is a women's political lobby group whose broad objectives are to bring about legislative changes to ensure equality for women and to influence and educate public opinion on a wide range of issues which directly affect women.
WEL has been involved in preparing pamphlets, articles, submissions and press releases on issues such as childcare, equal pay, maternity leave, affirmative action, the Sex Discrimination Act, superannuation, taxation, the budget and marital property. WEL has also jointly and solely sponsored conferences such as the National Women's Tax Summit, the National Agenda for Women Conference, and conferences relating to the UN Decade for Women.
WEL was formed in 1972, and the first National Conference was held in 1973. Until 1978, WEL consisted of state and regional groups only. At the 1978 National Conference it was decided to form a national office known as WEL (Australia) in Canberra employing a part-time National Co-ordinator and a Secretary/Treasurer. The role of the National Co-ordinator was to liaise with WEL groups, other women's organisations, politicians and the media; to produce the National Bulletin, and to co-ordinate national WEL campaigns.
WEL National Co-ordinators, 1978-88 are as follows.
1978-79: Maria De Leo
1980-81: Yvonne Carnahan
1982-83: Pamela Denoon
1983-84: Lorelle Thompson
1984: Joanne Morgan
1985-86: Jane Elix
1986-88: Lynn Lee
1988: Joy Taylor
In 1980 the WEL National Management Committee was established consisting of a member from each state or territory, the National Co-ordinator and the National Treasurer. The functions of the committee were to co-ordinate the flow of information to and from the National Co-ordinator and to assist in national WEL decision making.
WEL (Australia) is closely affiliated with WEL (ACT) which has provided financial and other support to the national office and the National Co-ordinator. There has also been some staff crossover between the two bodies. Many of the activities initiated by WEL (ACT), such as lobbying Federal MPs were later taken over by WEL (Australia). WEL (ACT) also had a major role in organising the National Women's Tax Summit in 1985.
