Biographical Note

Jocelynne Annette Scutt was born in Perth in June 1947. She graduated in law from the University of Western Australia in 1969 and undertook postgraduate studies in law at the University of Sydney, Southern Methodist University and the University of Michigan in the United States, and Cambridge University in England. She spent twelve months at the Max-Planck Institut in Freiburg im Bressau, West Germany before taking up a position with the Australian Law Reform Commission.

Subsequently Jocelynne Scutt has worked with the Australian Institute of Criminology, as associate to a High Court judge (Lionel Murphy), and as director of research with the Legal and Constitutional Committee of the parliament of Victoria. She spent some time at the Sydney Bar in 1981-82, and before returning to private practice in 1986 in Melbourne was Deputy Chairperson of the Law Reform Commission, Victoria.

Scutt has written, edited and compiled the following publications: Even in the best of homes: violence in the family (1983, 1990), For richer, for poorer: men, women and marriage (jointly) (1984), Growing up feminist: the new generation of Australian women (1985), Women and crime (jointly 1981), Different lives: reflections on the women's movement and visions of its future (1987), Poor nation of the Pacific?: Australia's future? Item Descriptions

Class MS 9396 (1). Original Consignment, 1982-1994

This consignment comprises various stages of drafts of books and articles edited, compiled or written by Scutt between 1982 to 1994.

Scutt's publications concentrate on legal and feminist issues and the collection includes a number of original works by Scutt and contributors prominent in the women's movement and other fields. Equally as important as these contributors, in Scutt's view, was the inclusion of lesser-known women from a range of backgrounds representing a broad cross section of the community. Scutt also wrote and compiled detective fiction under the pseudonym Melissa Chan featuring feminist detective heroine Francesca Miles. Among the papers donated by Scutt are original manuscripts and correspondence for the Melissa Chan books and a crime anthology edited by Melissa Chan and J. Terry.

The papers document the methods of modern publishing as well as providing an insight into the creative writing process and the feminist movement. They also show Scutt's development as an editor and compiler of specialised biographical and autobiographical works about women.

Each publication is designated as a separate series. Most of the publications contain original handwritten drafts and typescripts from contributors followed by a succession of edited contributors' drafts and, finally, manuscript proofs. The way Scutt worked as an editor meant that draft manuscripts were compiled at the end of the process, after individual contributions were edited and re-edited. In the latest publications, individual drafts were compiled into a draft manuscript at an earlier stage in the process and the main editing occurred at manuscript level rather than individual contribution/chapter level. The publications in this collection show the enormous advances made in electronic publishing during the early 1990s.

General correspondence in all the series is almost wholly about publication and publicity arrangements and consists of information or drop copies of correspondence. There is only a smattering of original correspondence in general correspondence series. Original correspondence is kept with chapter or contributor drafts. Because Scutt edited and wrote many publications simultaneously and manuscripts were not always dated, the Library has supplied approximate dates.

Scutt's publications in this collection are: Poor nation of the Pacific?: Australia's future? (1985), Growing up feminist: the new generation of Australian women (1985 and 1996), Lionel Murphy: a radical judge (1987), Different lives: reflections on the women's movement and visions of its future (1987), Women and the law: commentary and materials (1990), As a woman: writing women's lives (1992)), Breaking through: women, work and careers (1992), No fear of flying: women at home and abroad (1993), Glorious age: growing older gloriously (1993), and The sexual gerrymander: women and the economics of power (1993). The Melissa Chan books are: One too many (1991), Getting your man (1992), More on getting your man (1994) a crime anthology, A modern woman and other crimes edited by Melissa Chan and J. Terry, and Guilt (1995).

There are also papers from a special issue of Women and the Law published by the Women's Studies International Forum in February 1986 for which Scutt was a guest editor. The collection also includes some miscellaneous articles and press clippings from 1980 to 1991.

Series 1. Poor nation of the pacific? : Australia's future? (1985), 1984-86

In May 1984 the Australian Institute of Political Science held a conference entitled

'Australia- poor nation of the Pacific?' Scutt, who was a Director of the Institute, edited and arranged the conference papers for publication. The book, published in 1985, includes a keynote introductory paper by Dr Helen Hughes and articles by Dr Anne Summers and Ian McPhee.

This series contains copies of the papers presented at the conference, subsequent edited drafts of the papers, a miscellaneous folder of graphs and cuttings and a disc copy of Summers' paper, correspondence with some contributors and publishers, and drafts of the book.

Series 2. Growing up feminist: the new generation of Australian women (1985), 1983-86

Growing up feminist edited by Scutt and published by Angus & Robertson in 1985 explores the question of why some young women 'grow up feminist'. It examines the lives of young women (twenty-five years and under) to see what results the women's movement has had on young women's upbringing and outlook on life.

Contributors to the book were ten young women between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four years who came from different backgrounds and were asked to express their own ideas, views and goals in their contribution. Scutt contributed analysis and background information for each chapter as well as the introduction and epilogue.

Scutt was concerned that women in positions of power and influence should not drown out the authentic voices of young women. Contributors were: Anna Donald, Sarah Gillman, Emel Corley, Cathy Henry, Michele Trewick, Karen Ermacora, Mary Gartrell, Diana Forward, Jennifer Stott and Fiona Giles.

Growing up feminist was the forerunner of a number of publications edited by Scutt that explored women's lives by allowing women to speak for themselves. It was the beginning of what was to become a highly organised editorial program on the part of Scutt. The series includes a book outline, correspondence with contributors on editing of drafts, edited drafts, copyright releases signed by contributors, general publication arrangements and correspondence (there was a change of publishers in 1984) and copies of manuscripts.

Series 3. Women's Studies International Forum, (1986), 1983-86

In 1983 Scutt was asked to be guest editor for a special issue of the Women's Studies International Forum journal, Volume 8, number 1, February 1986. The issue to be entitled 'Women and the Law' was to feature articles from women in a number of countries dealing with various aspects of law as it affected women. The series includes Scutt's correspondence with editorial staff from the journal and individual contributors to the special issue. Sometimes Scutt attached individual replies to single pieces of correspondence although there is usually a roughly chronological arrangement. There are also corrections for some of the draft articles and copies of transfer of copyright agreements to Pergamon Press. Correspondence has been arranged to follow a broad chronological order.

Series 4. Lionel Murphy: a radical judge (1987), 1986

In 1986 Scutt was commissioned by McCulloch-MacMillan to edit a book of essays on Justice Lionel Murphy's impact on the Australian legal system. The book was published in 1987. Many of Australia's leading legal academics, lawyers and commentators contributed chapters which ranged from personal viewpoints like that of Neville Wran to detailed analyses of Murphy's effectiveness and contributions to the law. The series consists of an outline of the book, drop copies of letters to potential contributors, drafts of some chapters by Peter Henks, Laurence Maher and Garry Sturgess, extract of chapter from Rick Krever, miscellaneous correspondence which includes press clippings and a detailed publicity release.

Series 5. Different lives: reflections on the women's movement and visions of its future (1987), 1983-87

Different lives was conceived in December 1982 when Scutt suggested, in her outline of the book, that the years 1972-82 had had a radical effect on women's lives and it would be interesting to explore a number of women's lives from that perspective. The draft book was called Sea changes; the final title Different lives was allocated shortly before the book was published in 1987.

The series includes correspondence with publishers and contributors, original and edited contributors' drafts and copies of manuscripts and receipts for sundries. Scutt kept large envelopes for every contributor in which she placed successive versions of edited drafts. The envelopes functioned as check sheets cum publication timetables recording the movement of drafts, corrections, receipt of photographs and so on. The Library has retained the envelopes. Early papers from a ring binder have been placed into folders to comply with the Library's preservation guidelines.

Series 6. Women and the law: commentary and materials (1990), 1990

This book examines the history of women and the law in Australia from about 1900, when Australian courts and legislatures refused women the right to practise law, to the 1980s. The series consists of successive edited drafts of different parts of the book. The Library has rearranged the edited drafts so that successive drafts of the same chapters are placed in order to show the development of the book.

Series 7. Breaking through: women, work and careers (1992), 1990-93

Breaking through, edited by Scutt and published in 1992, built on the successful pattern established in previous books edited by Scutt. In this book women from a range of backgrounds told of their experiences, this time about their careers, and how they came to be in their particular career. Twenty-two very different women wrote of their experiences. Contributors included Janine Haines, Gay Davidson, Shirley Stott-Despoja and Jackie Huggins. Breaking through was the first book in the series 'Women's voices, Women's lives', a series which enabled women to speak of their own experiences in their own voices. It was also the first book to be published by Artemis Publishing, a feminist printing press that had been formed in January 1992 by Scutt to promote and publish women's writings.

The series contains a book outline, general correspondence about publication and promotion arrangements, successive copies of edited drafts and correspondence with contributors. Once again, contributors' drafts and correspondence were kept in envelopes that also functioned as publication timetables. Scutt treated herself as another contributor placing her drafts for the introduction and epilogue in an envelope. For preservation reasons, the Library has replaced contributors' envelopes in this series with folders. General correspondence has been organised in chronological order.

Series 8. As a woman: writing women's lives (1992), 1990-93

As a woman, published in 1992, started as Background lives reflecting the impetus for the book: the notion that women's backgrounds are of interest and can have a considerable effect upon their later lives whether in terms of lifestyle or career choices. The book was finally entitled As a woman, from the quotation from Virginia Woolf: 'As a woman, my country is the whole world'. Twenty-two women wrote about their lives, influences and involvements in the women's movement. Contributors were: Patmalar Ambikapathy, Marie Andrews, Katie Ball, Faith Bandler, Pamela Ditton, Irene Greenwood, Edith Hall, Merrin Hartrick, Robin Joyce, Renate Klein, Lenore Manderson, Rebecca Maxwell, Betty Olle, Moira Rayner, Julie Reiter, Michelle Schwarz, Jocelynne Scutt, Kay Setches, Sandra Shortlander, Judy Small, Lynne Spender, Anne Thacker and Gail Warman. As a woman was written in tandem with, and as a companion volume to Breaking through, which was also published in 1992.

The series includes a book outline, contributor's drafts and associated correspondence maintained in envelopes in alphabetical order, general correspondence on publication arrangements and a copy of the corrected proofs.

Series 9. Glorious age: growing older gloriously (1993), 1992-93

Glorious age was the third in the series 'Women's voices, women's lives'. Published in 1993, the idea of the book was that with age comes confidence and that ageing can be joyous, creative and powerful. The book consists of twenty-two women living in Australia aged between 35 and 89 talking about growing older.

The series includes general correspondence associated with the publication of the book, contributors' envelopes containing drafts, edited drafts and correspondence, and copies of the manuscript compiled at the end of the editing process. The Library rearranged the general correspondence related to Glorious age into chronological order; most of this correspondence is information copies of publishing and publicity arrangements.

Series 10. No fear of flying: women at home and abroad (1993), 1992-94

No fear of flying, published in 1993 by Artemis Press, was the fourth book in the series 'Women's voices, women's lives'. It contains the personal stories of twenty-five women who travelled to Australia to live, or who travelled from Australia to live abroad. The contributors from different countries and backgrounds travelled for a variety of reasons, for instance, to take up employment, to marry, to divorce, to escape, to study and so on. Contributors were: Gillian Hanscombe, Gisela Gardener, Ofelia Lopez, Mary-Ann Bin Sallih, Dorota Malchevski, Sylvia R. Hennessy, Anne Hickling Hudson, Jennifer Simon, Tui Taurua, Ania Wilczynski, Janet Labatut, Penelope E. Andrews, Lynne Weing, Vivienne Correa, Kristin Henry, Sandra K. McCallum, Jan Mock, Susan Ogier, Mickey Zhu, Kathy Kituai, Janet Wilczynski, Gloria Lee, Janice Farrell, Vivien M. Altman and Marlies Puentener.

No fear of flying was the first book in the autobiographical series in which the original drafts from contributors were sorted into book form from the beginning rather than being edited before compiled into a draft manuscript. Consequently there is a succession of corrected and amended manuscripts instead of edited contributors' drafts. Manuscript drafts have been placed in order, as far as possible, where dates or editorial annotations indicate the nature of the copy. The series also includes correspondence with the contributors and some general correspondence about publication and publicity arrangements.

Series 11. The sexual gerrymander: women and the economics of power (1994), 1993

The sexual gerrymander, a collection of essays and speeches written by Scutt over twenty years, was published in 1994 by Spinifex Press. It examines the social and political gerrymander facing women. The book is in three parts. The first part is an historical analysis of the way women have been denied a place in 'history'. The second part deals with violence against women and looks at how the law has been interpreted in ways that do not protect women from violence. The third part looks at women's contributions to remaking the world.

This series includes four manuscripts and a smattering of publicity material. There is no general correspondence, but there are extensive notes from Scutt to Spinifex on editorial style and corrections. These notes were kept with the annotated manuscript of November 1993 that was used as the main working draft.

Series 14. Getting your man (1992), 1989-92

Getting your man, published by Spinifex press in 1992, is a collection of short stories that were first written in 1989.

This series consists of the typescripts of the early short stories and sometimes a subsequent redraft of individual stories. There is an early manuscript that consists of the collation of the short stories. It contains editorial markings from the Spinifex editor and handwritten annotations by the author. Although undated, it was probably collated in early 1992. There is also a typescript manuscript dated 31 March 1992 containing corrections and editorial markings.

A modern woman and other crimes, edited by Melissa Chan and J. Terry, was the first crime anthology published by Artemis Press. J. Terry was another pseudonym for Jocelynne Scutt and was used as the contact name at Artemis Press.

There were some distinguished contributors to this anthology including some who were well known in other fields; for example, Margaret Bradstock, one of the authors, was a medieval historian who lectured at the University of New South Wales. For other contributors it was a departure into a new form of writing. Contributors were: Marie Beare, Bay Brown, Margaret Bradstock, Melissa Chan, Ashleigh Claire, Judith L. Clark, Sherryl Clark, Deb Hall, Blanche Hampton, Janet Labatut, Sue Neacy, Margaret Pender, Susan Perry, Kathleen Phillips, Lucy Sussex, J. Terry, Elizabeth Townson and Edel Wignall.

The series consists of a succession of original drafts and corrected drafts from the contributors to the anthology. There is correspondence between Scutt and contributors and some general correspondence on publishing and publicising the anthology.

Like Getting your man, the short stories in this book were written in 1989, and one or two in 1990, and then were put away for some time. The author said of this book: 'This is a real case of what a really good edit can do!'
