MS 3800 comprises photographs covering all stages of Copland's family early life and career, "Australian legation to China, 1966-1968", "Mt. Eliza, 1956-1960", "Canada, 1953-1956", "U.N., 1954-1955", and "A.N.U., 1948-1953". The collection also includes press cuttings and plans of houses and furniture, one ball invitation, a photograph of a manuscript draft of a poem, presented by Mrs. D.J.P. Tier. There are also diaries, research notes, cuttings, articles, lectures and correspondence, important material on the economic and political situation in Australia between 1920-1965 and useful information on such famous overseas figures as Lord Keynes and Chiang Kai-shek (159 boxes, 2 folio boxes).

Economist and academic. Sir Douglas Berry Copland was successively Professor of Economics at the University of Tasmania, Professor of Commerce at Melbourne University, Economic Consultant to Prime Minister John Curtin, Commonwealth Prices Commissioner, Australian Minister to China, first Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University, High Commisioner to Canada and first Principal of the Australian Administrative Staff College.
