Contains papers of the following Vicars-Apostolic of London District and Archbishops of Westminster; Bishop W. Poynter, 1817-27; Bishop J.Y. Bramston, 1834; Bishop T. Griffiths, 1839-1845; Cardinal N.P.S. Wiseman, 1842-1864; Cardinal H.A. Vaughan, 1883; and Cardinal F. Bourne, 1911-30. Also includes letters of Rev. R. Gradwell, Rector of the English College, Rome, 1818-1826 and Roman letters, 1871-1911 (in Italian). The papers relate to the selection of priests for Australia, missions, emigration to Australia and other aspects of the Catholic Church in Australia and the Pacific.

From 1688 to 1840 England was divided into four districts, each administered by a vicar-apostolic. In 1840 four additional district were created. In 1850 England was divided into the Archbishopric of Westminster and twelve suffragan sees.
