Biographical / Historical

The Gilletts were a Quaker family who played a prominent role in business and philanthropic activities in Banbury. Joseph Ashby Gillett (1795-1853) became a partner in Banbury New Bank in 1823 and after his death his son Charles Gillett (1830-1895) became chairman. Gilletts Bank was taken over by Barclay Bank in 1919. Edward Gillett (1833-1891) of Featherston, New Zealand, was a nephew of Joseph Gillett.

Concerning the estate of G. Scuse and a bequest to Edward Gillett of Featherstone, New Zealand, 1877-78.

The papers include a Power of Attorney from E. Gillett to B. Alphin of Banbury, bill of costs, receipts and cheques. The letters of E. Gillett refer to his purchase of a property, health and the destruction of his house by fire.
