Administrative History
The Astronomical Society of London was founded at a meeting at the Freemason's Tavern on 12 January 1820 with the aim of the 'encouragement and promotion of Astronomy'. Sir William Herschel was elected the first President and Francis Baily was the first Secretary. The publication of the Memoirs of the Society commenced in 1822 and the Monthly Notices in 1827. By 1830 there were 243 Fellows. In 1831 the Society was granted a Royal Charter, its name being changed to the Royal Astronomical Society. In 1834 the Society acquired rooms in Somerset House and in 1874 it moved to Burlington House. The Society has always collected books and manuscripts. The Library catalogue was published in 1866. In 1910-1912 the Society collaborated with the Royal Society in publishing The scientific papers of Sir William Herschel and in 1918 it was given the papers of the Herschel Family, one of the finest scientific collections in Britain.
