Administrative History

The Royal Society of Arts was founded in 1754, largely on the initiative of William Shipley who had published 'Proposals for raising by subscription a fund to be distributed in Premiums for the promoting of improvements in the liberal arts and sciences, manufactures etc.'. Lord Folkestone was the first President and Shipley was the first Secretary. The membership expanded rapidly and the Society's income rose from £360 in 1755 to £4,614 in 1763. Applications for prizes were referred to a number of committees: Agriculture, Chemistry, Polite Arts, Manufactures, Mechanics, Colonies and Trade. By 1764 380 premiums had been established, including 123 relating to the colonies. The Society published many pamphlets and in 1783 the Transactions commenced publication. In the 1840s the Society nearly became bankrupt and gradually the granting of premiums came to an end. Instead it became chiefly concerned with organizing lectures and publishing papers on a wide range of subjects in the weekly Journal, which first appeared in 1852. It played a leading role in the Great Exhibition of 1851 and in later special and international exhibitions. It promoted the establishment of the South Kensington Museum (later the Victoria and Albert Museum) and other museums, and took an active interest in international postage, patents, artistic copyright, the erection of memorial tablets in London, and the encouragement of industrial education. In the 1850s it established a system of examinations on many subjects, mainly intended for working class students. In 1852 the Society invited the formation of colonial societies and a small number of colonial societies were established.
