Introduction

Scope and Contents

Extracts, being class and piece lists with brief description, from the contents lists to the ten volumes of the Comprehensive List of Colonial Office Records. The extracts are arranged, as is the Comprehensive List, alphabetically by colony, bringing together under each colony the different classes within the Colonial Office record group that relate to that colony.

Colonies or territorial units covered are Auckland Islands, Australia, individual Australian States, Borneo, Brunei, East Indies, Fiji, Gilbert and Ellice Islands, Johore, Kedah and Perlis, Labuan, Malay States, Negri Sembilan, Sungei Ujong, New Guinea, New Hebrides, New Zealand, Western Pacific, Pahang, Perak, Sarawak, Selangor, Solomon Islands, Straits Settlements, Tonga and Trengganu.

Extracts covering Hong Kong, Mauritius, the Seychelles, Falkland Islands and Wei Hai Wei.

Extracts, being class and piece lists with tables of contents, from the two typescript supplementary volumes. The major portion of the extracts from Volume 1 consists of a class and piece list for CO 537, Colonies (General). Confidential Prints and Accounts Branch records are also listed. Extracts from Volume 2 include class and piece lists on emigration, governors' pensions, honours and Board of Trade records. A contents list precedes the extracts from each volume.

Short prefatory note followed by contents list for M418 and M420. The contents list for the supplementary volumes duplicates the two included on reel M420.

Volumes 1-3 contain the entire contents of M418, with the introductory ten pages of Volume 1 being the entire contents of M422. M420 has been reproduced in its entirety as a fourth volume. All four volumes bear the spine title PRO Colonial Office Records.

The original AJCP finding aids were unpublished typescripts or photocopies available from libraries that held copies of the original microfilm.

Dates used in this finding aid refer to the date range of the records selected for filming rather than to the date range of the Series or Files.
