Separated Materials

Gordon Griffiths - whose father was Ken Griffiths, member of the SSEM Sydney Advisory Council, chairman of the SSEM Board of Directors, and the person to locate the site for the SSEM's new field in Papua New Guinea, and who is Florence Young's great-grandnephew - gave Patricia Braga permission to deposit these maps, which came from the SSEM Archive, with the National Library of Australia. As at January 2020, the SSEM Archive is housed at the Iliffe Centre, Macquarie Park, New South Wales. Internal notes indicate that these maps were taken from Box 10 in the SSEM Archive.

Biographical Note

Florence Young commenced mission work among indentured labourers from the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu ( New Hebrides) on her brothers' sugar plantation and mill, Fairymead, near Bundaberg in Queensland, in the early 1880s. Steeped in the beliefs of the Plymouth Brethren and influenced by the English Keswick Convention, members of the Young and Deck families established the Queensland Kanaka Mission (QKM) in 1886 and extended it to various centres along the Queensland coast. Converts of the QKM returned to the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu at the turn of the century, among them Peter Ambuofa of North Malaita who appealed to the QKM for help. Two men from Queensland, Charles Pillans and Fred Schwieger, came in response. Both died of malaria. Subsequently, in 1904, the QKM formed a Solomon Islands Branch and established a principal station at Onepusu on the west coast of Malaita in 1905. The Mission changed its name to the South Sea Evangelical Mission in 1907. The Mission continued to operate in the Solomon Islands, and in New Guinea after World War II. Several of the maps in this collection bear the annotation 'F/L B. Deck', referring to Flight Lieutenant (Ernest) Brian Wentworth Deck, Florence Young's great nephew. Deck joined the RAAF in 1941, aged 25. He became a flight instructor with an initial base in Camden, followed by Temora and Bundaberg. In 1945-1946 Deck had an overseas posting in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, where he was involved in flying Austers for clean-up operations. He then joined the 33 Squadron at Lae, PNG, where he flew C47 Dakotas for further clean up ops until April 1946. A keen Christian himself, these signed PNG maps were brought home and used in discussions with family and SSEM Council to begin establishing mission work in PNG, supplemented by Brian's knowledge, having lived there for nearly a year. In 1997 the SSEM joined with the Asia Pacific Christian Mission to create Pioneers of Australia.

Biographical information on Brian Deck sourced from Braga, Stuart. (2013). All his benefits: the Young and Deck families in Australia. Wahroonga, N.S.W: S. Braga, available at Nq 2013-644, and from information supplied by Brian's daughter, Bronwen Courtney.
